The film reveals that Amy may have been a victim of the phone hacking scandal that engulfed the British tabloid press at the turn of the 2010s: Ashby reveals that some of Amy's phone conversations were reproduced almost verbatim in various sleazy newspapers toward the end of her life. The steadily increasing intrusion of paparazzi and reporters into her downward spiral is the main focus of the film's third act, and it becomes increasingly unsettling to watch.
