Two Steps Behind

I take three steps forward and only one step back
But somehow I always manage to find myself
Two steps behind
And although it seems like I'm playing major league,
I feel as though I'll always be on the losing team.
The last to pass the line
But the first to fight defeat.

It's inevitable.
Interminable.
This battle to which I've lost
Everything.
Including myself.
My way.
My hope.
My sensibility.
My reason.
My will to keep on
Fighting
For something--even I
Am not too sure is worth it.

They say, "then wait."
To which I ask for what.
My only sense of meaning is fleeting
And I'm to believe that
Dawdle
Will accomplish anything?
Solve everything?
It will resolve nothing.

You have to take the quill in hand
For the words will not write themselves;
Take the bull by the horns
Because if you do not,
Nobody else will!

Waiting for the world to change
Is just another way of saying you've
Given up

So I stand by my misguided dreams
In the hopes that someday,
"I have a dream,"
Will one day become
I had
But there's no need to admit defeat
Because you fought and you achieved
And now your dream is what you are

But you look down at yourself
From a bird's eye point of view only to realise
That you're still just those two steps behind.

But promise me,
Promise me you'll never give up

Because you will get there someday.
