T R I S
I shut my car door and lock it with the electronic key, and I can't help but notice a home movers truck parked outside next door. Our previous neighbors, Sally and Dave, moved house last week, and our new neighbors must be moving in today.
Sally and Dave's 17-year-old son, Kane, is a total weirdo. One time he came over to my house in just his boxers, asking me if I had a spare condom..
I shake the memory from my head and unlock the door to my house.
"Mum?" I take my keys out of the front door and close it behind me. "Dad? I'm home."
I take my heels off so my feet can actually breathe for once, and walk into the living room to see Caleb watching TV.
"They're not here," he says without looking at me. "Still."
"How come?"
"Something about meetings, I don't know. I wasn't even listening."
My eyes move from Caleb to the TV screen. I frown. "What are you watching?"
"Oh, it's this really interesting thing about space. Did you know that a single solar flare can release the equivalent energy of millions of 100-megaton atomic bombs, and-"
I snort, cutting him off. "Nerd."
Before he has time to respond, I walk out of the living room and head upstairs.
My room is massive and everything inside it is either pink, white or silver. I have a separate room that contains my clothes, shoes and accessories.
I put my handbag on the glass table near the door and flop onto my queen-sized bed. My phone pings so I take it from my back pocket and look at the notification.
Mum:
Your dad and I are both stuck at work again. Caleb isn't answering his phone so can you tell him to get you two some dinner? I'll pay him back when I come home xx
I sigh loudly. Both of my parents are never home and this is the 11th time this month that they haven't even been here to give us freaking dinner.
Me:
Whatever.
Yes, I understand that having a job as big as a doctor, like my dad, or a lawyer, like my mum, can be quite time-consuming, but it can't possibly take up all of their time.
"Caleb?" I call out. He doesn't respond, which probably is a result of not being able to hear because our house is enormous. I decide to go downstairs to tell him, but he's not in the living room like before. "Caleb?"
Surely he should be able to hear me now. I check every room in the house, even his disgusting bedroom, but I can't find him anywhere.
For fuck sake.
He probably just went to meet Cara or something, so I'll just get my own food. I unlock my phone and message Christina, asking if she wants to come and eat with me. Her reply is almost instant.
Christina:
I can't, sorry. I'm with Will. See you tomorrow? x
I roll my eyes.
Me:
That's OK. See you tomorrow x
I guess I'm just on my own, then.
