A few weeks after Jackson's death, once the school had properly mourned, Tom finally got the courage to sneak Melanie some love potion. He decided against the pumpkin juice because that's the same way Jackson was killed and he didn't want things to get suspicious. After an intense Transfiguration under the watchful eye of Albus Dumbledore, Tom stopped Melanie in the hallway.
"Melanie! Melanie!" He called.
Melanie turned around. "What is it?"
"I'm not sure if I ever got a chance to tell you how sorry I am about Jackson. He was a great guy," Tom said, trying to keep a straight face.
"Oh, thank you," Melanie sniffed, taking out a tissue. "He was great."
"Here, I bought you a sweet in Hogsmeade," Tom said, passing Melanie a cauldron cake with love potion in it. "I've always found that sweets make me feel better."
Melanie bit into it and smiled. "You know, Tom, I was so stupid for dating Jackson. Because you've been around this whole time. I love you Tom."
"I love you too," Tom beamed. "But I have to go to Potions now. How about we meet up in the library after dinner?"
"I'd love to!" Melanie said cheerfully as she skipped away. "Bye!"
"So?" Bellatrix asked once Potions had begun.
"She told me that she loved me!" Tom said excitedly. "She loves me!"
"Well, technically she doesn't, it's just love potion at work," Dolohov said.
"Shut up, Antonin," Tom said.
"So it worked? You gave her the cauldron cake?" Bellatrix asked.
"Yup!"
"And she ate it?"
"Come on, Bella, of course she did. I wouldn't be so happy if my plan hadn't worked!" Tom said, still beaming.
