Chapter Four- Skye Time
For the second time that day I woke up suddenly to a person being too close for my comfort. I immediately sat up and pushed myself towards the corner behind me. I was up against the wall with my ripped jeans hugged to my chest. I seemed to be on top of a mattress in a room with metal walls. I glanced at my surroundings and the person who currently shared the small space with me. It was a young woman who had long wavy brown hair and dark eyes. She seemed nice enough, but looks can be deceiving.
"Hey, it's ok. I'm Skye, what's your name?" well at least she was asking and not demanding things from me like the other man that I had electrocuted earlier.
"I think you already know the answer to that question. Who was the man that accompanied Phil and I here?" I still wasn't sure who to trust and who to keep away. My entire reality had been shattered in less than twenty four hours, nothing was as it seemed.
"You mean Ward? Ugh, I'm sorry he had to be the first person you met from our team. He isn't always like that, he's just really serious about missions and all that," she sighed, clearly she was truly sorry.
"My name's Kimberly," I reluctantly informed her and I scooted closer to her. She was a welcome guest, and I liked how she acted like this was all totally normal.
"Nice to meet you." She held her hand out to me. I went to shake it, but thought better of it. I pulled my hand away at the last second and studied it. There were still jagged lines etched into my skin by the sparks.
"Sorry, I don't want to hurt you. I kinda shocked Ward in the forest." I wasn't sure if she had been informed of that incident.
"You did that to him? He said that his tazzer malfunctioned. How did you even do that? Can you teach me?" Skye thought it was cool? She wanted to be able to do it too.
"I honestly don't know," I answered her. My powers were as much a mystery to me as the unfortunate people I used them on. Something clicked inside my brain. "I killed him," it was barley even a whisper. My face fell into a terrified expression. My eyes began to tear up again and I shut them tightly. I went as far back into the corner as the walls would allow. My knees dug into my chest, but I didn't even feel it. The horrifying events of the other day played again and again in my mind.
"Kimberly, what are you talking about? Kimberly?" Skye tried to calm me but I shrank away from we touch.
"You have to get away from me! I'm going to hurt you!" I didn't want my new friend to obtain the same fate as the gunman at my school. Breathing became difficult and I started shaking.
"No you're not going to hurt me. Shhh you're okay. Come here." She let me lean against her shoulder as I cried. I was sick and tired of all the tears, but I couldn't stop them from streaming down my cheeks.
I don't know how long we stayed like that, me crying and Skye telling me everything would be okay. I finally managed to contain the water that kept trying to force its way out of my eyes.
"Come on, let's get you cleaned up." Skye stood up and gently pulled me with her. It hurt to stand; my entire body was sore and I didn't want to move at all.
Sky led me out of the metal walled room and as we exited the small space I became aware of a strange sound. "Is this an airplane?"
"Yeah, it is. We live up in the sky here. It's called 'the bus'. Pretty cool, huh?" I nodded my head in response and followed her through different rooms and hallways. We passed Ward sitting on a bar stool and sipping a drink. He shot me a death glare that I'm sure I deserved.
We ended up in a bathroom and Skye left me there, saying that she would be right back. I studied my reflection in the mirror and was appalled.
My normally long golden waves of hair had formed a tangled mass on top of my head that was littered with twigs and leaves. My tattered clothes were covered in crimson stains and rips that exposed my skin. The fabric stuck to my body and was slightly damp from my sweat. My cheeks were pink and had wet streaks from my tears. My eyes weren't red anymore though. No, they were actually a beautiful shade of green. They were a deep grey green, like a forest being glimpsed through a thick fog in the few moments between the late afternoon and night. It looked like I had been in a war zone.
Skye returned with a brush to help me tame my wild mess of hair. Then she left me to shower with plenty of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I was glad for the hot jets of water that might have burned a normal person's skin, but I didn't care, I loved it. I overused the hair products and gladly scraped the layers of sweat, blood, and grime from the surface of my body.
When I stepped out there was a new set of clothes for me. The all black was fine by me, although the tight tank top and black skinny jeans were not what I would pick. I preferred baggy clothing that hid me from the prying eyes of horny middle school boys. But this was better than my tattered batman shirt; I hoped I could get a new one. My superhero shirts were my favorite part of my outfits.
I didn't bother trying to dry my hair at all. I rung it out a bit, but just let it fall past my shoulders. It was already forming waves, so I pulled a hair tie from my wrist and pulled my hair into a side braid.
I walked out of the small bathroom and as I did I decided to walk out to what had seemed to be the living room area of the plane. It turned out to be a terrible idea, because as I stepped into the room Ward was there to greet me.
"Um hi, Ward." I tried to smile, but the tall broad shouldered man scared me half to death, although it was probably a quarter considering that I wasn't even really a human.
"It's Agent Ward. I don't really deal with kids well, so just stay out of my way." I noticed that he hadn't forgotten my accidental use of powers.
"Oh ok. I'm sorry about the electricity incident in the forest too." I couldn't look at him. I didn't really handle strangers well. Especially men like him. they always made me feel small and insignificant.
"It was a tazzer malfunction, it wasn't your fault." I got that he was trying to preserve his manliness and all, but that was totally an insult towards me. I had this cool ability that he had just seriously down played! He didn't even know me!
I felt my anger swell inside me and a phone buzzed to my right. My hand shot toward it and I somehow pulled the electricity from the device and directed it toward Agent Ward's hand that rested atop the counter next to his drink. He let out a yell of pain and shock, and then glanced from his hand to me.
I realized then that in my right hand I held a ball of pure electricity. I didn't know how much but it was still there and looked really impressive and deadly. Then to my surprise it lowered onto the surface of my hand slowly sunk beneath the surface and I felt it disperse through my body. All my soreness melted away and I felt a sudden sense of courage.
"What just happened? That was so cool!" I was surprised to turn and see Skye standing in the doorway. When I turned she gasped.
"What? What's wrong?" I asked. I was scared of her answer.
"Your eyes," was the only answer she gave.
