For centuries, the peaceful underwater city of Ember has been governed by the Council. Loved by their people, the Councilmen and women work tirelessly to ensure that justice and order are preserved within the boundaries of their city.

But, it isn't enough.

As the seventh and youngest daughter of the Head Councilman of Ember and a descendant of the founder of Ember, Arylline "Ari" Emberwood has a lot to live up to. Ignored by her family in favor of her more accomplished older sisters, Ari has a lot of time on her hands. Time in which she begins to notice that all isn't right in her seemingly perfect world. A mysterious entity known only as The Trader is beginning to assert control over Ember, and the Council is no longer able to keep it at bay. They will require help...from land. And the world above isn't exactly being cooperative.

In order to save her city from oblivion, Ari must do the unthinkable. She must make a deal with the Trader.
