Chapter 40 - Goodbye
It’s wonderful when you feel like everything is falling into its rightful place, like the storm is finally leaving and now you just have to go out and enjoy the sun. Cassie and I have so much ahead and it’s true, it’s just our beginning, but I’m willing to face anything for her. I don’t know what makes her so special to get guys like Jake and I to do anything for her.
Girls tend to think that by being beautiful they’ll get any guy they want. It’s not like that. Yeah, a hot girl catches any guy’s eye, they can have something and she’ll never be alone. She’ll be admired and adored, but that won’t assure her that she’ll keep those admires. Beauty fades away with every day, we are constantly changing and a pretty face won’t keep the guy next to you forever. But a good soul will. Maybe those are harder to see and we get distracted by the package, but when we see what’s inside, we don’t want to let it go.
Cassie is like that. She’s not hot, she’s not the most beautiful girl you have ever seen, but once you get to know her you see how wonderful she is and you don’t want to let her go because she even makes you be a better man.
Packages are all different and they are just protecting what’s inside. Packages can get ruined, scarred and even forgotten, but what’s inside will stay inside, protected and no matter how it looks outside, if what’s inside is good you’d still love it.
Cassie was a package that I didn’t notice at the beginning until someone else pointed me in her direction. Then I saw what was inside and fell in love. And I think that’s how it was supposed to happen because having her in my arms feels like home.
“Is Jake still with, uh, within you?” Cassie asks me after a while when we’re sitting on a bench we found on our way.
“Yeah,” I reply remembering how he helped me to not let the opportunity go. He knew Cassie needed to hear my confession and he urged me to make it. I owe him that Cassie and I are now together.
“Why hasn’t he left? He mentioned something about risking himself. What did he mean?” She questions next and I take a deep breath.
“I’m no expert, but for what I got souls are not supposed to stay in this dimension, but he did and the longer he stayed here, the more he faded away. That’s the term he uses,” I explain and she frowns a bit, making sense out of what I’ve just told her.
“So he’s fading away… then why hasn’t he left already?! Is he stupid?” She exclaims and I laugh.
“I think he is, you know?” I tell her but she looks really worried. “I dunno, he was supposed to leave as soon as I told you but he stayed and I dunno what he’s waiting for.”
I’m leaving… I just wanted to see this. I wanted to see her happy and knowing someone would take care of her, Jake speaks in my mind and I raise my eyebrows in surprise. I don’t think I’ve heard him like this, ever. Only when he showed me memories of his life with Cassie.
“What? Why do you have that expression?” asks Cassie in an agitated tone.
“He is leaving soon, he just wanted to make sure you were happy and with someone who could take care of you. He really gave me his blessing,” I answer and she blinks surprised before her cheeks turn a lovely rosy colour and she smiles shyly at me.
“So he’s leaving… you’ll be left alone.” I can hear the weary in her voice and a bit of fear in her eyes. For a second I’m also scared because I don’t know what’s going to happen once Jake’s gone.
What if the only reason why my soul stuck with me was because he pushed it inside and stayed with me? What if once he leaves my soul leaves as well? What if I’m not the same after he leaves? What if I stop loving Cassie?
