Dear father, you are my little hummingbird.

Lighter than a nickel
Smallest of your kind
The vast beat of your speckle sized heart
frightens me like no other.
The rise of your voice, the anger in your face,
my body quakes from a mile away.

Yet even then,
I await the furious flutter of your feathers
each morning
Patiently, with early dew jeweled on my petals.
Bright and warm
flourished and open,
I give all that I have to you,
with the hope of pride in my chest,
to make space for your return.
But you must know,
you are bigger than my fist will ever be.

And the absence of your being, that half of me,
the wake of the cool dusk,
will shatter me.
