Two Broken Souls

The next day at school was the same as usual, as if the night in the city never happened. Lukas came to school on his bike and hung out with his girlfriend, Rose, and stayed with his group of friends. For the whole morning Lukas didn't even acknowledge the existence of Philip until they got to Astronomy class together. 

"Good morning students" the teacher said as everyone took their seats. "Today we will be starting your first semester projects that you will present to the class on the last day of the semester" 

"Can we work with someone on the project?" a familiar voice shouted from the right side of the classroom in the very back barely paying attention

Philip walked into class late and when he went to go sit in his usual spot in the back someone was already sitting there. The teacher looked at Philip and said... "Mr. Shea, since you can't bother to come to class on time you obviously don't get your choice of seating" 

"So where should I sit?" Philip asked 

The teacher looked around the classroom and noticed there was a lab partner missing from the back of the room. "Go sit over in the back next to Mr. Waldenbeck" he abruptly said so that he could continue talking about the project

Philip walked over to Lukas and sat down next to him. Neither of them looked up at one another for the fear that someone would think they were friends. Lukas just sat on his phone texting and listening to music rather than acknowledging the fact that Philip was now sitting next to him. 

"Now back to what I was saying" the teacher said "I will assign each of you a partner and you will work to find a constellation in the night sky and relate it to the way that people in history navigated the oceans, or how they told stories"

"Can't we pick our partners?" a voice shouted from the middle of the classroom 

"Absolutely not" the teacher said "the partners were chosen with deep carefully consideration based on past performance" he said as he fished for a single piece of paper with a list of names on it "Grace and Kelly, Chrissy and Dan, Samantha and Anthony, Michael and David, Lukas and Philip" 

As soon as he said both of their names Lukas and Philip quickly glanced at one another. They didn't want to be partners together however, being partners could get them to grow closer to one another without it being sentimental and weird. 

"Now everyone get with your partners and start discussing because once you leave class today you won't have another opportunity to work in class" the teacher said 

Lukas didn't look up for a while until Philip broke the silence and said "what should we do our project on?"

"I don't know dude, I just really don't want people to start talking about us" 

"Us working on a project together" Philip said laughing "Lukas your a paranoid little brat, get over it for three seconds and pick a topic" 

For the rest of the period Lukas and Philip didn't talk to one another and they just wrote down their ideas on paper. Every time the teacher looked up at them their was no hope in getting them to speak, all they did was keep writing and typing on their laptops about the possible constellations that they could see in Tivoli at this time of year. 

After class Philip gathered his stuff and he ran out of the classroom not even bothering to look at Lukas anymore. 

In the hallway Philip went up to Lukas and said "Look we have to talk about yesterday" 

"hey Lukas, who's the freak?" a voice from the background said making Lukas nervous 

Lukas put his head close to Philip's and whispered "Get out of here now" hoping no one would here him 

Philip didn't move but he was about to turn away when suddenly Lukas lunged towards Philip and without a moment of hesitation he punched Philip in the face. Even though there was a lot of sorrow, Philip rushed forward and pushed Lukas into a wall. Suddenly there was a whole crowd of students surrounding them as they punched one another. The principal finally came and broke up the fight, sending them both their separate ways. 

During lunch Philip sat alone by himself in the library like he always did. He was searching through his laptop and found himself sitting on Lukas' YouTube channel. He was watching all the videos of Lukas and realized that the video Philip took was never posted. All the old ones that were still uploaded sucked. 

He had a lot of videos and more subscribers than Philip would've thought. He clicked on the first video Lukas ever uploaded and watched it all the way through. Philip was beginning to feel like a stalker because after one video ended he would click on the next one. Philip was basically mesmerized by the videos so much so that he didn't even notice that Lukas walked into the library for his lunch detention punishment. 

"What are you doing?" a quick speaking voice whispered into Philip's ear 

"Holy shit" Philip immediately snapped at him "don't scare me like that" 

"Come on city boy, I said what are you doing" he repeated with a smile on his face 

"Nothing" Philip said 

He quickly tried exiting out of the screen but the mouse wasn't working. When the screen went down, there was another page opened to Lukas' YouTube channel. That made Philip seem like a little bit of a stalker. Finally he just shut his laptop entirely so that they could just change the subject as fast as possible. 

"You stalking me Philip" Lukas asked laughing 

Philip looked up at Lukas for a second, then he looked around the library. It was completely empty. Even the librarian was in the back searching for new books to put on display. That explained why Lukas was actually talking to Philip for the first time during school, only because no one else was around. Lukas sat down in the chair next to mine and shuffled it closer. 

"Empty library means you can talk to me now right?" Philip asked with sarcasm 

"Yeah it does, and it also means I can do this" Lukas leaned in and kissed Philip and quickly pulled back in case the librarian came back 

"Okay that was pretty smooth, but you fucking punched me in the face" 

"That wasn't me Philip, you know the real me more than anyone and we've only known each other for a few days" Lukas said shuffling closer to Philip and kissing him one more time "You can't talk to me in front of my friends, it's not a good idea"

"I won't anymore my jaw got the message loud and clear" Philip laughed as the librarian started coming back into the room 

Lukas immediately got up and said "I'll text you later, okay?" 

"Sounds good" Philip said as he finally reopened his laptop back to Lukas' channel and finally exited out of it.
