And all at once, with the flick of a switch,
we were nothing more than shadows of the dead.
We were soldiers from the very start, two hearts that only beat in the line of survival. We did not remember a time before, only what we lived through now. Children with not a lick of hope left in them, we wished for a better life, for more out of the world that had taken everything from us. My brother and I, and the creatures between, we made it out somehow.
Living on ground that did not give us a chance to exist outside of surviving, a pull between two choices; to make it out alive or to die trying; our souls were tired of trying. To give my last breath for the boy, to bleed myself dry, I would do anything for him to see another day.
In a world where we had no choice, but to fight the monsters in our heads and the ones lurking beneath our beds, we had turned into nothing more than walking skeletons.
We would feel this ache until the end of our days.
