Chapter 30: Happy Birthday Riley

I put my feet through the rails on the empire state building. I gave a long and heavy sigh. I've been back for about a week and my life is already being turned upside down.

Sam approached me and put his legs through as well. "Hey."

I looked away ready to cry. "Hi."

He laid backwards and sighed. "Th- This isn't-"

"Fair? Damn right it isn't. But a promise is a promise."

"I know, I know." I said putting my head on the rails. I hid my face into my crossed arms. A year ago Sam told the Guardians he will go back to space with him after he finishes the shield school program. Long distance isn't going to work so knowing us..... we broke it off. Broke up. It's over. Finished. And I can't can't help but think this is my fault

"Riley I th-"

"You don't have to justify yourself." I said a bit crumpled but still holding a smile.

"Don't be like that Riley."

"Sam, I'm being so serious." I said holding my breath.

"Hey remember that time I had Danny push you off the helicarrier, just so you'd forgive me for the comic books I ruined?"

I chuckled. "Yeah but it back fired cause all I did was yell at you."

"And let's not forget- that time you kicked Kyle's ass."

I couldn't help but laugh then try to contain it. Kyle would kick my ass if he found out I was still talking about this.

"When do you think you are coming back?" I wiped my eyes looking at him.

"You know what Riley?!" He said dodging the question.

"What?" I said looking at the city.

"Come with me." He smiled sitting up. I looked at him in disbelief. "You've always wanted to go to space, then come live there with me."

"I thought about it. I thought about everything. That's what the Guardian's asked me a few days ago. But I can't."

"Is it because of the Avengers?"

"I promised Fury I'll actually do a good job there. Stay out of trouble....plus I'm not a space girl." I gave a pained smile.

He let out a long sigh. "I don't want to leave this place. I really don't want to leave you." He said falling back to the ground.

I fell back with him with a thud. I grabbed his hand and curled up next to him. "Do you have to go though?"

"Yeah. I don't intend to break my promises now." He winked

"Will we still be friends?"

"Why wouldn't we?"

"You'll be so far and I'll just be here..."

"I'll try and call as often as I can. I still love you Riley." He put his hands on my cheek to push my hair away. He kissed me for what I painful believed was the last time.

Its a depressing morning for me. Sam left around 7 which messed up my sleeping schedule. I played with the stuff animal that Sam gave me last minute from Build a Bear.....from 4 in the damn morning. How...

In return he stole the bear that he gave to me a while back. Which is fair on some accounts. Sam gave me all his hoodies and took the rest of his clothes to space. Ugh his generosity and kindness is killing me.
