Halsey has bipolar disorder, which "Gasoline" touches on throughout. "Insane" isn't the most clinical term, but it identifies her mental state well enough. In a manic episode that she couldn't completely control, she splurged on expensive alcohol. Halsey asks if people are willing to put up with her "insanity" as her life spirals down the drain, leaving marks (stains) on those who become close to her. After all, people find it crazy  a common symptom.

In fact, Halsey stayed in a castle in Wales where she took a bath in red wine, and wrote several songs for  and noted in  that she was "having a mental breakdown."

There was a claw-foot bathtub in my room so I called down to ask if they would bring me some wine. They knew I was a musician because my label had called ahead, so they brought up 10 bottles. Are you high enough without the Mary Jane like me?

One of the side effects of bipolar disorder is , the state of having higher energy levels than normal, often creating a sort of "high." Halsey asks if people feel this same sort of high that she does without the influence of Mary Jane, which is a slang term for marijuana. Halsey speaks of a new, diversified generation taking advantage of the spreading legalization of marijuana.

Do you tear yourself apart to entertain like me?

According to Halsey, this lyric  She thirsts for attention, for fame and glamour, even when it hurts her and the people around her. When she's manic, she puts her all into entertaining her fans, to the point of self-harm. Doesn't help that industry artists are expected to grind.

During concerts, Halsey often sustains injuries. For , she has a signature move of  once the beat drops. This causes damage to her knees, resulting in bruises.

Do the people whisper 'bout you on the train like me?
Saying that you shouldn't waste your pretty face like me?


With an unconventional style, shown by her blue hair and tattoos, Halsey stands out amidst a crowd, leading to judgement of her by many people. Similar to how she was told to  in , Halsey is reprimanded for trying to express herself and staying true to who she really is

This also connects to the media's perception and interpretation of her brutal honesty. She doesn't censor herself, even if the public may perceive her raw, expressive truth as vulgar.
