We stood in a slightly awkward silence for awhile. Then, Arthur pulled out a battered book from his coat pocket.
I glimpsed the title, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.
He handed the book to me."Read it to me, won't you?"
It sounded more like a statement than a question.
"What if I don't want to?", I scowled.
Arthur paused.
"Then I'll kill your friend."I sighed, bowing my head in submission.
This simply served as a reminder of the situation I was in.
This man couldn't be trusted and I wasn't to expect the kindness he had shown me last night as a regular thing.I started to read.
Captain Kirkland gave little gasps and laughs in all the right places. Despite his earlier threat, I found myself smiling slightly.
But, as I read, one question nagged on my mind.
After I finished the third chapter, I asked him.
"Who read you the last 3 books?"
Arthur's face grew dark and he griped the wheel a little tighter."Others. Other people who came before you."
I nodded. So, I wasn't the first.
But then, I wondered.
"Where are they or.. What happened to them?"Captain Kirkland let go of the wheel and one of the crew took it. He walked to the front of the boat, standing with his hand against the railing. I hesitantly followed.
Without looking at me, he answered."Some disappeared, some left, and one.. Died."
