Chapter 19

Tension filled the room like a thick fog the second the event began. Every echoing footstep sent anticipation rushing up our spines and our stomachs in an uproar. All except for Logan, who true to his nature, fed off our energy and would constantly be out for blood. I had assumed that we would be fighting on the first day of the event but guard after guard passed us, each with their own fighter that would be participating.

I banged my head on the wall as my stomach reminded me once again, that I was starving. I looked over to Rosa seeing her hands balling up into fists then releasing repeatedly. "Are you alright, Rosa?" She looked up and gave me a smile which took me by surprise.

"Yes, Miss. I'm just... eager... for this to start." I wasn't clear if she wanted to fight or if she just wanted to get out of here. Our fight with the psychopaths seemed to flip a switch inside her but as long as it didn't ruin her, I wasn't too concerned. Right now, she just seemed a bit combative, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

"So am I." Four days was an eternity to be away from Nicholas and the ship. I sighed feeling the emptiness inside me grow bigger. I was like missing a limb without him here. We had been together for years, always joined at the hip and now I was alone with our newest crew member. One that I wasn't able to protect.

"It's only a matter of time now." Riya assured us. "It's the second day so we should be brought out at lunch or dinner time." I nodded trying my best to relax. I could feel my eye begin to twitch as Logan started up again. Rosa seems to have gotten used to it but for me, each growl was a cry of pain. I let a lazy grin stretch across my face when a thought occurred to me.

It was only a matter of time before we'd all be free.

"Showtime." I cracked an eye open as the cell door rattled open. My senses went on high alert as a dozen men stood outside; two men came into the cell and unhooked Logan from the wall. His laughter picked up as he picked up on what was about to happen and more guards came to help as Logan thrashed around.

"Pretty red will paint the floors!" He laughed as they pulled him along. Two guards came in for Riya and she offered no words or even glances towards anyone as she was lead away. "Pretty red!" I looked over at the four remaining guards and sighed.

"Are you up to full strength? You'll need it for this fight." Rosa shook her head which wasn't a good sign. Sure, Riya was on our side but Logan was a wild card; he would act purely on instinct and his instinct wanted to draw blood. If Rosa couldn't change, she could be hurt. I know I'll have to rely on my devil fruit power but I'd have to wait until the right time. If I use it prematurely, the fight would be called off and our escape plan would be ruined.

"We're getting paid a lot for this event." The men all smirked at me as they unhooked my chain from the wall. "You better put on a good show."

"I intend too." I smirked keeping my head down as they pulled us along. I peaked up, disappointed when I didn't see Riya and Logan. They must have taken a different route to the opposite side of the arena. This was it, though; we might not get another chance that was as good as this one was. The men kept pulling at the chains trying to get me to stumble which started to irritate me. I guess events like these even brought out the worst in the guards too.

"Ladies and gentlemen! The fight you've all been waiting for!" I could hear the feminine screech of the announcer followed by the roar of the crowd. I could almost feel the energy from here which meant Logan would be in a frenzy. We came to stand in front of the familiar double doors and out of habit I lifted my arms so they could remove the binds.
