The two days went by fast. Ruby stared at her now empty room. She had mixed emotions about belonging to Sapphire. She didn't want to belong to Sapphire. She didn't want to stay at the facility either. It was more like a prison to her, honestly. Belonging to a sapphire probably felt no different.

Ruby paced around her room, mumbling words to herself. "What if she ends up not liking me? What if I make a fool of myself? What if I do something stupid in front of her? What if she ends up hating me and sends me back. Or worse! Gets me shattered? There's tons of me anyways, but that's not the point!" Ruby's thoughts didn't help at all.

Her swarming thoughts were interrupted by a light knock on her door.

"Come in," Ruby said loudly enough to be heard from the outside.

The door opened and there stood a small blue gem. Sapphire gave Ruby a small smile. She wanted Ruby to feel comfortable with her. Sapphire could tell how uncomfortable Ruby was in this situation. Sapphire would've most likely felt the same if she was Ruby as well.

"Ready to go, Ruby?" Sapphire asked, slowly approaching Ruby.

"Yeah, yes! I'm ready," Ruby shook any unnecessary thoughts out of her head and focused her mind on the what she was supposed to focus on.

Sapphire.

They left out of the facility in silence. Sapphire wanted to talk to Ruby. After all, that is the reason she wanted a ruby in the first place.

"So, how do you feel about all of this," spoke Sapphire, her first attempt to start a conversation.

Ruby sighed, "I don't know. I feel a little uneasy about it. That isn't anything bad, is it?" Ruby turned to face Sapphire.

"Of course it isn't. It's your first day on the job, so take it easy, okay. If I were in your shoes, I'd feel nervous too." Sapphire smiled. Ruby couldn't help but blush at the smile that appeared on her face. She took a deep breath and looked away.

"You feel better?"

"A little bit, I guess."

They reached the front door of Sapphire's sanctuary. Ruby looked up, noticing the two amethysts guards at the door. She definitely recognized the short amethyst.

Amethyst was defective like Ruby herself. Amethyst was short, of course. Her long, pale lavender hair fell just above her ankles. Her hexagon cut gem was placed on her chest. She wore a white tank top and black leggings that were ripped in the shape of stars, where her knees would be. Her eyes were a dark blue. Amethyst's eyes were big and full of expression.

"Amethyst?" Ruby barely let out in a whisper. Amethyst looked at the two gems, recognizing the small red gem. Her eyes widened and she couldn't make out any words at the moment.

"Rubes!" Amethyst exclaimed. Ruby couldn't help but jump into Amethyst's open arms and wrap her own arms around Amethyst's neck.

"Amethyst! I miss you so much!" Ruby burst into laughter and was on the verge of crying tears of joy.

"Ruby! It's been so long!" Amethyst realized something. "Whoa, so you belong to Sapphire now, huh? It's fine, dude. Relax, relax. I know how nervous you get when it comes to meeting new gems, but don't worry. Seriously, Sapphire's cool...literally," Amethyst said.

Sapphire watched, trying to figure out what was going on.

The words that came out of Amethyst's mouth actually made Ruby relax a bit. She trusted Amethyst with her life. She couldn't help but believe almost everything she said.

"Anyways, how's Holly Blue," asked Amethyst.

Ruby rolled her eyes and chuckled, "a bitch as always." Ruby and Amethyst snickered, remembering the memories they had back at the facility.

Sapphire cleared her throat, "I don't mean to interrupt, but I...I mean we...should probably get going."

"Right, right! See you later Ames!" Ruby turned away, smiling. The two small gems entered Sapphire's sanctuary.

"It appears you already know Amethyst. That's nice, but how," asked Sapphire, almost as if she was demanding a story.

"Well, you see, Amethyst and I clearly aren't normal. We are defective. I'm not like other rubies. Amethyst isn't like other amethysts. Back at the facility, we made sure to stay by each other. Amethyst was basically my best friend. You know we had this saying, 'worst gems stick together and that's why we're the best," Ruby paused to let out a small laugh.

"We didn't come up with that saying, of course. Somebody else did..." Ruby had a flash of sadness and hurt cross her eyes that Sapphire noticed, but she didn't dare to ask about it.

Ruby continued, "Amethyst was such a good friend. Don't get me wrong! I'm pretty sure she still is. Anyways, we comforted each other at the worst times, when we had an emotional breakdown, when we need to share feelings or when we just needed to let out our emotions. She even gave me a punching pillow, though I ended up burning it." Again, Ruby paused to let out a laugh. She missed the memories she had with Amethyst.

"Most of the times we would just talk about random things. We told each other jokes and we pranked a lot of gems. That explains why Holly and the rest of the gems pretty much hate my guts. We did almost everything together...until..." Ruby's voice trailed off. "I don't know how to say it in a way without hurting you, my Sapphire."

"I know what you are going to say anyway and it doesn't hurt me at all," Sapphire sighed.

"I forgot you sapphires have the power to see into the future," mumbled Ruby under her breath.

"You were going to say that Amethyst soon got assigned a job to guard me. Ever since Amethyst got sent away, gems have been making fun of you, teasing you...laughing at you. Doing anything in their path to hurt your feelings. I understand you know. It isn't your fault," Sapphire faced Ruby giving her a comfortable smile. They stopped in front of a path of stairs that leads to who knows where.

"You aren't going to get made fun of here, I promise you that," Sapphire took Ruby's gem embedded hand in her own. She started rubbing Ruby's gem in a comforting way. This sent shivers down Ruby's spine due to how comforting it was. Ruby wasn't used to the warm feeling of comfort.

"I-I...thank you, my Sapphire. Really, thank you. I...that made me so happy." Ruby scratched the back of her neck as a small smile appeared on her face.

"That's how I want to make you feel," giggled Sapphire as she pointed to the stairs, not realizing she still was holding Ruby's hand, "the stairs lead up to your room."

"What!? I mean, that's a lot of stairs. I can't walk up these stairs forever. Well I can, but I don't want to," Ruby said wearily yet jokingly.

"C'mon! I bet the view will make you change your mind," coaxed Sapphire.

"I doubt it," Ruby turned away from Sapphire, crossing her arms as a way to tease Sapphire. She heard Sapphire huff and she couldn't help but laugh.

"I guess I'll get the room for myself. I mean, the color red isn't that bad and the whole right side of the wall can switch from being a wall to a window. Staring at the stars and the galaxies may give me some inspiration for my drawings after all," Sapphire tried convincing Ruby by stating her opinion in an obvious, teasing tone.

Ruby turned her head slightly to look at Sapphire at the corner of her eye. She finally gave in.

"Alright, alright. I'll look at the room..or whatever," Ruby started walking up the stairs, Sapphire trailing behind.

After a minute of what seemed to be walking up a hundred stairs, the two gems made it Ruby's room. A gray door with a red dot in the middle of it.

"You do know how to open a door with your gem, right?" Sapphire asked. Ruby nodded.

"Well, I'll leave you to unpack now." Ruby nodded again and watched Sapphire walk down the stairs.

Ruby sighed and entered her new room.

Her new home.
