-----------------------------------------------------------
Turtle had never expected to be friends with Scarlet's supposedly death champion, thousands and hundreds of lives of dragons settled in her talons.

He had never expected Peril, to be, well, Peril.

She was just Peril. She wasn't actually Peril, the word that spread terror among orange and red dragons, or the name that lingered in many dragons' mouths, tasting like a bitter, sour label put onto someone born with a curse that she took advantage of.

Her scales were part of her curse. The ability to set things on fire just by a single flick of her claw- it was monstrous, it was horrifying, it was just terrible. No one should harbor that kind of power. It was as risky and dangerous as animus powers, except that you could use animus powers for good.

Firescales? No, when Turtle heard that, it followed into an eavesdropped conversation of doom and fury and fear. Peril was the ultimate monster. She dared to kill a whole continent of dragons, and as far as she went, she couldn't be stopped.

So why...

Why did she not seem dangerous to him?

She was funny, that was one. Two, she was actually kind and kind of clumsy. Three...

...she wasn't like the dragon Turtle was described to when he was young. She was humorous and laughed at his jokes, or when she accidentally set something on fire she would apologize immediately. Especially when she got all flustered and worried about something. She was brutally honest and never lied.

That, Turtle decided, was Peril. Not the firescales Peril, not the monster Peril, it was just Peril.

If no one was going to accept her,

He was.
