bitter silence

"hey," i smiled, receiving bitter silence in
return, but i wasn't surprised. i knew
silence would find its way back
into this room, "how are
we today?"

an all too familiar scoff lightly hovered
over the thin air before dropping
back to absolute silence.

"i see," i whispered, oddly wanting nothing
more than the comfort of the other.
