Adam:

Adam's heart threatened to beat out of his chest as he stood beside Lisa in front of the school waiting for Cameron to arrive.

Lisa gave him a worried look. "What's wrong, A? Your heart is beating faster than a rabbit's, and you reek of anxiety."

"I'm nervous about seeing Cam again."

"You don't have to be. He's your mate which means he'll always take care of you."

"I know, but he's so..."

"Hot?" Lisa finished with a sly grin.

"Hey." Adam nudged her shoulder with his. "You're not supposed to notice how hot my mate is."

Lisa shrugged. "It's not like I'm the only who's noticing."

A small growl escaped Adam before he could stop it.

"Oh my God." Lisa laughed. "That was so cute. Do it again."

"Bite me," Adam said as the smile slid off his face. "Cameron's here."

"How do you know?"

"I can sense him."

Lisa went still for a moment, concentrating on the surrounding sights and sounds. "Huh, I can too. I wonder if that's because he's going to be the next pack alpha."

The reply Adam was going to make was lost when he spotted Cameron and his brothers heading toward them. The beta wolf he'd seen yesterday was also at Cameron's side.

Cameron looked so delicious in his dark jeans and tight, navy blue T-shirt. The predatory way he moved contrasted the smile he gave when he saw Adam watching him.

"Hey, baby," Cameron said as he came to stand beside Adam.

A blush heated his face when Cameron leaned down to press a kiss to his cheek before taking his hand. Since Adam had never held hands with another guy before, he wasn't sure if the tingles racing up and down his arm were normal.

His shy smile slipped when he noticed one of Cameron's brothers sneering at him.

"Are you okay?" Cameron asked, and Adam just nodded. "Oh, shit, I'm sorry. You haven't met everyone. These are my brothers, Colby and Carver, and my best friend, Mitch."

Cameron pointed at each wolf as he introduced them. Carver was the one who didn't look happy to see his brother cozying up to a guy. The others didn't seem to have a problem with it.

"Guys, this is Adam, my mate," Cameron added.

Adam was taken aback. Not only by the pride in Cameron's voice but by his willingness to tell them Adam was his mate. Despite being gay, some wolves weren't as receptive to having a mate of the same gender. Over the years, Adam had seen it often enough in all of the packs he'd been part of.

Maybe this pack would be more tolerant. Then again, maybe not if Carver's expression was anything to go by.

The bell rang to warn them they only had two minutes to get to their first class. While everyone else said a quick goodbye, Cameron kept a tight hold on Adam's hand.

"Where's your first class?" Cameron asked.

"You don't have to walk me to class," Adam said softly.
