"Gerald?" I ask shaky. "Do you
wanna team or not?" I nod slowly putting my torch into the sand like a stake. He
managed to grab a backpack from the cornucopia. "I was waiting for you to open it. I
wanted to be allies ever since of what you said on the train. That was brave, man." He
unzipped the blue backpack. "I swear if you're trying the 'star-crossed lovers from
district 12 thing, -'" "No." He pulled out a water bottle, some wire, a small karambit, a
small knife, and a rag. "What's this-- -" "You don't know how to use it." I say snatching
it. "And besides, you're holding it wrong." I show him how to hold it and what the
karambit does against the tree. "I've practice in one of the sessions." He nods. "I also do
karate but prefer not to use violence unless absolutely necessary." He shows me some of
his moves as we got materials to set up base. "You tired?" he asks, trying to find ways to
use the palm tree as shelter. "Nah. Do you think we'll get lightning?" I twirl the wire
once around my finger. "I saw in the 75 th Beetee used the wired and the tree that got hit
by lightning at the same time, because the arena was a clock to make a trap thing."
"Maybe from a heat storm." He says cutting of leaves with the knife. I didn't realize how
hot I was until I looked at my palms. We took our materials back to the cave and set up
base. The sun was setting and I could see the junction where the force field met the sky or
whatever it is. We agreed since Gerald was exhausted I'd take first watch. He obviously
wasn't asleep, I mean who could. He sat up right as I tapped him and he pointed to the
sky. We watched all of the fallen tributes from today. The boys from 5 and 7, the girl
from 7, the guy from 8, and the boy and girl from 9. "Do you have arrows?" He shakes
his head. I felt like I was standing guard for infinity! My eyes started to droop so I woke
Gerald and we switched spots. I drifted right off somehow hoping I wouldn't die.
