it's my turn to drive now, and luke is seated at the passengers seat, wide awake from his almost two-hour nap.

"ky?" he speaks up in a hushed tone because the three boys at the backseat are fast asleep.

"yeah?" i reply, keeping my eyes on the dark road.

"what do you think about my shoes?" he asks me, but i can't look at them because i have to keep my eyes on the road.

"what do they look like?" i ask him.

"my black vans." he answered simply.

"i like them. you gotta buy new ones asap, though. those are so worn out." i smile, remembering all the times luke has stepped on water and mud puddles.

"noted." he chuckles, and we fall silent.

after a few minutes of silence, he speaks again, "ky."

"hmm?" i answer.

"what do you think of my jacket? does it suit me?"

i giggle at his question, "yes, luke. everything looks good as long as you're wearing it."

"thanks, ky." he smiles.

"sure."

"love you."

i pause. he did it again. he tells me he loves me at the most unexpected times, and it always catches me off guard.

"love you too, luke." i say slowly, meaning every word. i wanted to say i love you more but i thought that would be too much.

silence fills the air again.

"ky?" he asks after another five minutes if silence.

"yes, luke?" i reply as if i'm talking to a five year old.

"did you like my lip ring?"

"yes, luke. we all did." i laugh at his question.

"okay. i'll have it redone once we get home again." he says.

silence again.

this time, he doesn't speak anymore after a few minutes because he's fast asleep.

i turn the radio on, lowering the volume, and these are the first lyrics i hear from the song that's playing:

you fell asleep in my car, i drove the whole time, but that's okay i'll just avoid the holes so you'll sleep fine.

"i love you more." i whisper.
