Memories of us

As I watched the sun set over the cliffs and over the ocean,
I couldn't help but think about everything that happened,
About the past and present,
And even a little about the uncertain future waiting for me just over the horizon.

I sighed a little,
Hugging the sheer sarong closer to my body,
As if it could keep me away from the slight afternoon breeze,
And maybe from the little bit of nervousness still clouding my heart.

I tried to smile,
But it probably looked more like a grimace than it ever was a smile, So I dropped it.
Trying to dig through the barrage of memories stored in my mind, Looking for something that will bring me comfort,
Something that would make me feel warm,
Even if it was just an illusion.

And there it was,
Deep in the special recesses of my mind,
It glowed as if it knew just the perfect memory I could drown myself in right in that moment.

And finally I smiled,
A real one,
Not one that looked plastic, Forced,
Or even a grimace,
But one that came from deep in my heart,
A genuine smile,
The smile that many had said captured hearts.

My megawatt smile,
I had teasingly called it,
The one that he had jokingly told me instantly captured his heart, The one he told me to reserve only for him.

As I laid my head against his chest,
As he looked down at me with those adoring eyes.

Eyes I'd never see again.

I could feel the silent tears as they glided down my cheeks, Embracing the pain the memory contained,
All the while smiling that megawatt smile he loved so much.

I could feel the slight tug on the hem of my dress,
Looking down,
I laughed a little,
Or whimpered I'm not sure,
As I picked the little boy up from the ground.

The one that filled my heart up with so much joy,
The one that stole my heart with his own megawatt smile.

As I looked down at him,
I tried blinking away the tears from my still watery eyes,
As I tried to heave in a ragged breath.

I startled a little from the sudden question the child voiced,
"Why are you crying mommy?"

I smiled down at him wiping away the few errant tears still trickling down my cheek's,

"Mummy's crying because she remembered something sad baby, But now that you're here mummy's happy again."

I smiled a watery smile at him, Surprised as he reached his hand up to wipe a single tear still clinging on to my cheek,
I giggled a little at the familiar sensation.

Watching as he giggled to,
"Daddy says that we should get home soon mommy,
He says it's getting dark and cold. The time when monsters come out and eat little kids like me for dinner!"
He said in a dramatic tone with wide eyes,
Chuckling a little as I heard his own little tummy rumble.

"How about your little tummy? You hungry to?"

I asked him,
In reply he shook his head up and down in such a fast manner only little kids can pull off.

Telling him I'll only be few minutes,
I watched as he ran towards the car parked a few feet away, Watched as the man that i married,
And adored,
Got out of his seat to put our little boy in his booster seat.

Deciding that I had stalled long enough,
I looked down at the glass bottle with a message inside,
Sitting on the grass near my feet, And picked it up,
Said one final goodbye,
A goodbye to my past,
And a final official goodbye to us.

And threw it of the edge of the cliff I stood on,
Kneeling and looking down right on time as it splashed into the deep infinite sea,
The same way that our memories were infinite,
They were the kind of memories that even if I had moved on,
And you had too,
It will always be in our hearts forever till we die.

It was also a symbol for myself,
A sign that I'm moving on,
That I was finally over you,
And ready to take on a future that wouldn't involve you.
