A clever young witch, whom you already know,
Is tending the field where her vegetables grow.
'My plants need some water, the ground is quite dry,
But sadly there isn't a cloud in the sky.

If only,' the witch sighs, 'I knew a rain spell . . .'
And she picks up her bucket and walks to the well.
But just as she gets there, she hears a great roar,
And a big hairy beast knocks her down with his paw.

'Oh no! It's a lion!' the clever witch cries.
The lion comes closer and stares in her eyes.
'He's going to eat me! Oh golly! Oh dear!'
He opens his mouth and he roars in her ear,

'I've caught you, young witch. Now you'll be my next meal.
I just can't imagine how frightened you feel!
Just look at me! Look at me! What do you see?
There's nobody, nobody fiercer than me.

I'm handsome, majestic, I'm tall and I'm strong.
My mane is so shiny, my tail is so long.
My teeth are so big and my face is so proud.
My claws are so sharp and my roar is so loud.

I'm sure you agree with me, witch on the ground,
That I am the scariest creature around.'
The witch sits up straight and says, 'Oh no you're not!
Scariest creature? You're just talking rot!

I know of a creature more frightening than you.
He's handsome, majestic and tall and strong too.
His mane and his teeth and his tail are like yours,
And I know for a fact he's got very sharp claws.

His face, I assure you, is equally proud,
But his roar? Oh my goodness! It's terribly loud!
The ground shakes, the trees shake when this creature roars.
His roar is a hundred times louder than yours!

His roar gives you butterflies deep in your tummy,
Even the bravest knight runs home to Mummy.
His roar makes you quiver and tremble inside,
Even the giants find somewhere to hide.

It makes your knees knock, it's a terrible sound!
This beast is the scariest creature around.
Everyone's scared of him, Lion. It's true.
He's easily ten times more frightening than you!'

'Impossible!' Lion says, 'How can this be?
There can't be a creature more frightening than me!
Everyone knows, I'm the scariest beast.
I'm sure that I am . . . Well, I think so, at least.

Hmm . . .' says the lion, his lips start to pout,
'I wonder, perhaps, I should check this beast out?
Now tell me the truth, Witch. Don't tell me a lie.
Where does he live? Is it somewhere nearby?'

'Oh yes,' says the witch, looking scared, 'Very near.
Even the thought of him fills me with fear.
Where does he live? Do you want me to tell?
The scariest creature: He lives in that well.'

'He lives in that well, eh? I'll go take a peep.'
The lion takes off with a bound and a leap.
He gets to the well and leans over the wall.
'Be careful!' the witch shouts. 'You don't want to fall!'

'He's there!' Lion shouts, 'In the well, I can see!
The funny thing is, Witch, he looks just like me!
He's just as majestic and handsome and proud.
It's time to find out if his roar is as loud.'

He takes a deep breath and he opens his jaws,
He leans into the well and he roars and he roars.
RAAH! AH! AH! AH! AH! The echo comes back.
It's louder by far than a big thunder crack.

RAAH! AH! AH! AH! AH! The ground and trees shake.
RAAH! AH! AH! AH! AH! It's like an earthquake.
It's loud and it's scary, this sound from the well.
The lion falls backwards and lets out a yell,

'Oh help!' shouts the lion, 'The witch was quite right.
This beast in the well, Oh! He gave me a fright!
I'm trembling with fear. What a terrible sound!
He's surely the scariest creature around!

I'm feeling the butterflies deep in my tummy.
My legs are like jelly. I just want my mummy!
I'm running away, Witch! I'm leaving for good!'
The lion turns round and runs off to the wood.

The witch claps her hands, 'Oh! Thank goodness he's gone!
I'll get back to work now, there's lots to be done.
She picks up her bucket and walks to the well.
'If only,' she mutters, 'I knew a rain spell . . .'
