Alex P.O.V
A few minutes later, Madalyn had seated herself on the floor, staring up at the screen before her. She took a deep breath and began to type on the computer. I wanted to rub it in her face that there was an actual computer but I figured that this wasn't the time. Our world relied on her.... getting Jack and maybe even London. Madalyn went through the system, checking it out and it's layout before groaning.
"I can't do this!" She sobbed.
Trevor shot to his feet. "Yes you can... in fact, I think I can help you."
She glanced up at him. "Can you reverse the system?"
"I think so..." he frowned, touching the keyboard. "Yeah. Yeah I can."
They began to confer and talk about tech stuff. Maven and I sat on the floor, bored out of our minds. She flopped on the ground and sighed, while I started doing push-ups. No time like the present to work out. Finally, even that got boring and as far as I could tell, Madalyn and Trevor hadn't gotten anywhere.
I grabbed Stellar's laptop and since the geeks weren't using it, I surfed the internet. I started by asking Siri dumb questions and ended up looking at apocalypse aesthetics on Pinterest. At one point, the computer started blaring panic at the disco randomly. Maven was pacing nervously when I found an illegal website called, "old movies."
The name was pretty self explanatory and I began an old, animated, Disney movie called Frozen. I soon lost interest, but Maven really got into a song that seemed really feminist and weird about letting something go...? I don't even know. The 2010's were strange years. Most people don't even talk about them. They'd had some weird stuff.
Almost 2 hours later, they were still hacking. Maven finished her movie and I searched trends from 2010's. Fidget spinners? Slime? Water bottle flipping? Dabbing? I shook my head in dismay. Weird. This dabbing thing looked like you were sneezing. I went back to the movie website and found something called the emoji movie.
... What?
My thoughts were interrupted by a loud gasp. I turned to see Madalyn, staring at the computer screen in horror, her hands at her mouth. Trevor's muscles were tense and his jaw clenched.
"What? What's going on... who died?" I said, glancing at the screen. It appeared to be a code.
Madalyn's voice was shaking as she spoke. "It's a plan."
"What plan?" Maven frowned.
Trevor continued, taking over for Madalyn. "It's what Chaos is going to do with the U.S. They want to bomb the world and start over, making a utopian society where everyone agrees since they all have chips in their arms, you know... the recruiter thing. Anyways, they're going to make America their base... a military base." He looked at me, his face filled with fear and disgust. "They're going to take away free will. And... and they're succeeding."
Maven covered her mouth. "Oh my gosh... can we stop them?"
"No." Madalyn said. "No we can't. The only thing we can do is free Jack and leave. I got a notification on my phone that the CPO had two planes leaving for Japan and Britain tomorrow. Our only hope is to run away and wish someone else can stop this... this monster."
I was struck speechless. "So Chaos is telling everyone that this isn't the apocalypse... it's a rebirth."
"Basically, yeah." Trevor eyes were hollow, full of pure anguish. We were watching the world crumble in front of us and we could do nothing. "Come on, Madalyn. Let's free Jack."
In the silence that followed, surfing the web lost all fun. Besides, to complete the hack, Trevor took the laptop. He glanced at the "emoji movie" and screwed up his face. Maven curled up in a corner and fell asleep. I yawned and stretched out on the floor. I slowly felt the world disappear and I drifted into a light sleep.
