Your eyes are now bright and are free of your tears

A small smile spreads across your lovely face

You close your eyes now free of fears

And slowly drift into a better place

I plant a kiss upon your warm forehead

And listen to your breathing start to slow

Then I take my place beside you in bed

And hold your hand, praying you never go

Softly I whisper, “I love you my sweet”

But no reply comes from your pale red lips

So instead I listen to the birds tweet

As now from this world and me your soul slips

I hold back my tears as best as I can

And know that now I am a lesser man
