her mother
once told her a story
about how her father had
stepped out of their apartment one day
leaving her alone as she slept
and locked himself out,
forgetting that she was there.
he called her mother to unlock the door
and they found her in her crib
crying her eyes out.
to them, it was something that
they could laugh about in retrospect
but for her it was a preview
of what was to come.
