Today, my barber said 'minorities' isn't a word.
He said it's simply a connotation used by white people in dominantly white societies to refer to other races. Because they know that these other races do not and will not have the same privileges as them.
'Minorities' refers not to the ratio of the population, but rather, the ratio of privilege.
For example, in a dominantly black society the word 'minorities' does not exist. Even though they are less white people, they cannot be considered a minority because they have the same opportunities as everyone else.
A word just doesn't exist in some countries and not exist in others. It's simply, not a word.
And, in some ways, I think he's right.
