I went into work the following day with my eyes trained to the sky. Hopefully, today wouldn't bring any spontaneous thunderstorms and stampedes. But as I walked away from my car towards the park entrance, a shrill voice made me think that a storm would've been much better than this. "Dan! I tried to find you yesterday! Where the hell were you?"
"Oh. Hey, Allison." I mentally face-palmed myself for getting out of the car at possibly the worst time.
"Wait, wait, wait. You guys know each other?"
I darted my eyes over Allison's shoulder to where Phil was walking towards us, hands in his jean pockets and a smile on his face.
"Well, yea. I gave him a free Dole Whip a while ago, but it seems like he didn't appreciate it."
Phil, who had reached Allison and was standing beside her, looked at me with his eyebrows furrowed, obviously trying to work out whatever Allison was talking about.
"Look. It was a busy day, ok? My first time at Disney World since I was very little, ok?"
"What's going on? Allison? Dan?"
"I gave this fine person here my number on a free Dole Whip and he had the nerve to throw it away! Then he forgets his phone when I tried to give him my number! I swear, I will tattoo my number to your face if this keeps happening!"
I rolled my eyes, thoroughly annoyed at this girl who thinks it's her purpose in life to give me her number and date me. I looked at Phil, hoping that the look I was sending him was enough to tell him to get me out of here.
"How about we just go inside, ok? I need to get changed," Phil said.
He brushed by us both, walking ahead of us with his head tilted towards the ground. I couldn't understand what had gotten into him. One minute he approaches me with a smile and the next he's pretending that I'm not there.
I walked after him, brushing off any attempt Allison had at starting a conversation. Though that didn't work since she began to blabber non-stop the entire journey into the park. Phil still hadn't slowed down to walk with us, keeping a steady three paces between us. Allison finally broke off when we arrived to the secret building, claiming that the Dole Whip stand needed setting up while obviously trying not to look disheartened from the lack of conversation. Phil disappeared into a dressing room as soon as I entered the main room, which made something inside me collapse.
I felt angry. Sad, yet angry. Angry enough that I walked over to where he had disappeared and knock loudly on the door, right below the hanging "Occupied" sign. The door opened a little bit and a portion of Phil's face was visible along with some of his black hair. "What, Dan?"
"What do you mean 'What'?" I raised my voice slightly as I spoke. I saw Phil flinch and open the door a little wider, beckoning me in as to avoid getting looks from the people in the main room. I stomped in, satisfied when I heard the door close behind me. I turned around and faced Phil, annoyed beyond belief.
"What do you mean 'What'? You practically ignored me the entire walk over here. Did yesterday not mean anything to you? Did I mess this whole thing up?"
"Oh, sorry!" he said, raising his voice so it matched mine in volume. At this point, both of us weren't concerned with attracting attention from other people. "I guess I should've known this would happen!" he continued.
"What the hell, Phil! You aren't making any sense!" I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror behind Phil. My fists were clenched to the point that the veins on the back of my hands stood out.
"Yea, well maybe you should just go off with Allison like everyone else has! Be like Andrew! Be like Brice! Just go off with her already so I can get this over with!"
