There was an amazing gathering today at the Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu to welcome the Polynesian Voyaging Society's canoe Hōkūleʻa home. It has traveled 60,000 sea miles around 23 nations and territories on a 3 year global journey.

It is a replica of a waʻa kaulua, a Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe. Since 1976 Hōkūle'a has been on 9 voyages to Micronesia, Polynesia, Japan, Canada and mainland USA, only using ancient Polynesian methods of navigation, primarily by using the stars.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society have really done themselves proud with this.
