"Sir, it's not my fault! I just can't concentrate in your class!" Dan protested.
He had been failing in history over the past few months, mostly because he had been messing around with his mates and partially because he could never be bothered to do the homework and revision, and now his teacher was getting to him.
"So who's fault is it Dan?" Mr Lester asked him sternly, raising his eyebrows.
"I don't know, the school for making me choose this subject?" Dan quipped back, sitting on the edge of a desk, arms folded.
"Dan, you picked the subject because all your friends chose it. I know this as a fact. This is part of your GCSE's Dan. You're a smart boy and need this to get into a good college. I know you're doing better in all your other subjects, the ones where you aren't with your friends. This is your last year, you are 16. You want a good job right? Then at least try working hard for it," Phil said, getting slightly annoyed at how little Dan seemed to care. He was a bright boy, Phil knew he could do better.
"Sir, how can I when the subject is so boring?" Dan whined back.
"By finding a way to interest yourself in it. You find crimes interesting right? Jack the ripper ring any bells? Try listening tomorrow lesson and see if that catches your interest, alright?" Mr Lester told him.
"Fine, but no promises I will like it." Dan stated to him. He grabbed his backpack and swung it onto one shoulder, then left the room without a backward glance.
Phil sighed, Dan Howell really was a piece of work. All the teachers talked about him in the staff room, passing on information about how rude, noisy and uncaring he was. But at least he did the work in their lessons, it just seemed like he was trying to make Phil's life difficult. Phil had also heard rumours passed around in the class from the students, talking about how many people he had slept with, and what he did at a party, or some things that were just totally unlikely, like setting a car on fire for fun. Dan Howell was a popular twat, but he wasn't an arsonist.
The other teachers had seemed to have given up on helping Dan, just letting him do whatever he wanted, but Phil wasn't going to have that. He was going to be the one to successfully tame Daniel Howell.
The next day as soon as Dan swaggered through the door Phil knew he was unlikely to actually do what he had sort of promised. He watched him slump into a chair next to his friends and start joking around with them, acting a lot more stupid then he really was so he could fit in, smirking at a few girls in the class, his 'groupies', some of the teachers called them. They were just as stupid as Dan for liking his act in Phil's opinion.
Phil called for quiet and the class eventually shut up after a while, apart from Dan's table. He was whispering to the guy next to him, Sam, chatting and laughing about something Phil couldn't catch.
"Dan, Sam, can you stop declaring your undying love for each other and listen as now isn't exactly the most romantic of occasions." he said dryly, flicking the PowerPoint on screen with 'Jack the ripper' as the title and hearing some of the class giggle at how he had shut Dan up. He glanced over at him and saw him raise his eyebrows in an amused fashion and yawn, staring at the board, but a pink tinge had run across his cheeks. Oh, so Dan wasn't as tough as he seemed.
He started teaching the class about this blood thirsty serial murderer, going into detail about the deaths. He thought he saw Dan prick up his ears at how they were maimed, but when he looked over properly he was drawing on the table.
"Mature," Phil said under his breath. "Really, really smart." But he gritted his teeth and tried to ignore it.
He sighed and set the class some work, walking around after a few minutes of perching on his desk to see how people were doing.
