This guy reminds me of Han Solo for some reason.
Anyways, he was one of the few American Patriots with a bounty over his head from King George III. At Lexington, it was him that the red coats were looking for. It wasn't helpful that he was tried for smuggling tea, but good old John Adams did some lawyery things and got him cleared.
It's probably the smuggler and arrogant part that make him Founding Father Han.
