Chapter 24: The Secrets that Bind Us
Clary's POV
"How the hell are you alive?!" I snarl. I started to see spots of light.
"You." He answers simply. My father's usual silky smooth voice sounds more ragged and rough.
"What do you mean?" I huff. The blackness that surrounded me, was no more. I could see the different ways the light hit certain things. I could see Jonathan's gorgeous yet coniving face.
"How the hell can I see again?" I commanded. Although I sounded frustrated and upset, I was confused and excited.
"I put something in the liquor." Jonathan answers. "At least now I know it worked." He smiled at me. But not a genuine smile, more like a satisfied answer.
"Well let me be more specific, your blood. Your blood has angelic properties. Mixed with the right things and well here I am." His voice dripped with satisfaction.
"No way! Angel blood can't bring you back from the dead! It's unholy!" I can feel my hands shaking so I clench them in a fist and bite on my tongue.
"I know that. And that's why Jonathan used his blood too. The demon blood brought me back to life. The angelic blood is keeping me alive. Well for now at least."
"What's that supposed to mean?" I cross my arms over my chest.
"Well I'm not completely myself yet. The angelic blood is keeping me alive but it has a time limit until I have to replenish. But don't worry Jonathan and I are working on something to keep me around." I take a step toward him. A small one so Jonathan doesn't notice.
"I still don't get it, Valentine. Will you at least come out of shadows?" I growl.
I take another step forward. A bigger step. A step Jonathan does notice. He steps in front of me and shoves me backwards. I land on my back.
"Watch your step, sis." Jonathan mumbles under his breath.
"By the Angel, Jonathan! Don't treat your sister like that! We need her help! Help her to her feet!" Valentine states.
Jonathan doesn't even twitch.
"NOW!" Valentine bellows.
Jonathan grabs my forearm roughly and heaves me to my feet.
"Thank you, Jonathan." Valentine pats Jonathan's shoulder. I can hear Jonathan mutter something under his breath, but Valentine grabs my attention. "Like I was saying, Clarissa, I need your help."
I glare at him. "Why on God's green earth would I dare help you?"
"You don't really have a choice." He steps out of the shadows. My father no longer looked himself. He looked like he had aged 50 years. His skin sagged everywhere. His hair, now wispy and white, was only in patches. He hunched over making his spine curve awkwardly. He looked so small and frail.
"I don't have a choice? You are absolutely no condition to make that choice for me, old man." I challenge.
He chuckles. "You are correct, Clarissa. Fortunately, your brother is loyal to me. He's also a pretty damn good fighter."
Jonathan smirks. "Now, back to what I was saying. I need your help to keep me alive. You don't have a choice because if you don't help me, I have the power to take away everything that you love. Your family. Your friends. Jace." Valentine grins evilly
"Don't you dare lay a hand on any of them, Valentine!" I grab Valentine by his collar. "I swear by the Angel, if you so much as think about hurting any of them, I will kill you." Valentine simply smirks and then snaps his fingers.
Jonathan springs into action. He hits my forearms hard making me drop Valentine to the floor. Jonathan punches me across the jaw causing me to stumble backwards.
"Jonathan!! Stop this! You're better than this. You don't have to listen to this psychopathic monster!" I put my arms up to defend myself. I punch at Jonathan's stomach. I land a blow. But Jonathan barely nudges. He swipes my legs, making me fall over onto my back. Jonathan gets on top of me and holds my arms to the floor. I struggle to get out of his grasp.
Come on Clary! Think! Use your head! Wait! My head!
I gather all of my strength and launch my head into his. I slam into his hard. He stumbles and releases his heavy grip on me. I punch him twice in the jaw. He gets to his feet. I launch my knee upward into his groin. He yelps in pain and falls to his side. I take this chance to get onto the offensive. I kick Jonathan in his stomach. He groans in pain. I kick him again but this time he grabs my foot and twists my ankle. I feel a pop and then a snap. I fall onto my back and hold my leg. I try to hold back my cries.
"As you can see, Clarissa, Jonathan is more than capable of handling any collateral damage that could be on our road to glory." Valentine sounds like he's on the edge of megalomania.
"Killing innocent people isn't freaking collateral damage, Valentine! That's murder! Are you so far gone you've forgotten the fine line of who to kill?" I snarl.
He kneels down to my side. "Clarissa, I will not ask again. Will you help me or not?"
"If I decline, will you kill everyone I love?" He nods.
"Then fine. I guess you and Jonathan are safe. I will never love you monsters. You all deserve to rot in hell!"
He chuckles. "Always the feisty one, Clarissa. Oh one last thing. If you even think of telling your friends or family, I won't hesitate to have them killed."
"Well how will you know if I tell them?"
He motions to the statue like Jonathan. "Jonathan will be my eyes and ears until I regain my full strength. Anywhere you are, your brother will follow. Just be careful of who your with, Clarissa. I wouldn't want your brother to see you in such compromising circumstances." He gets up and walks to a table stocked with weapons.
"Now for the fun part. Jonathan bring your sister over here please."
Jonathan scoops me up his arms. He walks over to Valentine, who is now hold a small sharp dagger. The dagger had a green liquid dripping from it's tip.
"Clarissa, please hold out your forearm." I cross my arms.
"Clarissa please don't be difficult." I don't budge. "Jonathan." Jonathan lets go off my feet and thrust my arm in front of me.
"This will probably hurt alot." My father looks possessed by a demon.
He was unfortunately very much right.
