Writing Tips No. 4: Capitalization (Part 1)

A/N: Dito madalas na nagkakamali ang halos lahat ng mga otor na nakaparehas ko sa mga book clubs.  Hindi ako nagmamagaling ha, dahil halos lahat ng libro ko ay mali-mali rin.  Una, sa lahat - TAMAD po akong mag-edit, kaya pasensiya na.  Ina-apply ko po ang mga natutunan ko sa mga future chapters ng kasalukuyang kong aklat na isinusulat.

RULES ON CAPITALIZATION:

✔ Always capitalize the pronoun I.

I am Eira, the ignorant author in Wattpad.

I always make sure I capitalize the pronoun I correctly.

✔ Always capitalize the names of people, animals and places.

Laging nag-uumpisa sa malaking titik ang pangngalang pantangi, lalo na ang pangalan ng tao, hayop at pook.

People (Tao):

👉Darcess Ericka Angelique M. Valdez
👉Joanne M. Santos-Montecillo
👉Seth Eron Xyvier Yang
👉Raniel Xavier Johansson

Animal (Hayop):

Garfield, Clifford, Peanuts, Scooby, Dory, Nemo, Spot

Places (Pook):

👉 C. Almeda St., Pateros, Metro Manila
👉 D.M. Cruz St., Sta. Ana, Taguig City
👉 Botanical Garden, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
👉 Bldg. C,  Main Square Compound, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

✔ Always capitalize initials of names.

✔Capitalize courtesy titles and abbreviations of titles when they are used with names or in place of name. Capitalize them when used in direct address.

👉Miss Santos; Ms. Santos
👉Mister Montecillo, Mr. Montecillo
👉Missus Mateo; Mrs. Mateo
👉Detective Monterios; Det. Monterios
👉Captain Gila; Cpt. Gila
👉Doctor Valle-Kristos; Dr. Valle-Kristos

🎯Example of replacing their names.

✒"How's the case of Sen. Gila, Detective?" her father asked.

✒"Good morning, Doctor.  How are you today?"  His patient waved at him with a sweet smile.

❌ Do not capitalized them if they do not replace the name.  If they are preceeded by the, a | an.

The detective is thoroughly studying the current evidences.

✒Check if the doctor is in his clinic.

✔ The terms of endearments used as names are also capitalized.

✒"Good morning, Darling Princess," said Jomel and give her a quick peck on her lips.

✒"Hello, Sweetheart." The mischievous boy winked to a nerdy girl.

❌ If the endearment is preceeded by a possessive pronoun, do not capitalize.

✒ "Jem Montecillo is the name of my darling princess," said Jomel.

✒ "Your sweetheart is calling you," said Yzzy to her nerdy friend, Angel.

🎯 HINT: Try replacing the title with name.  If it works, capitalize it.  If it doesn't make sense, do not capitalize it.

✔It works:

✒"How's the case of Sen. Gila, (Detective) Jorelle?" her father asked.

✒"Good morning, Doctor (Jonas).  How are you today?"  His patient waved at him with a sweet smile.

Nonsense.

The detective (Jorelle) is thoroughly studying the current evidences.

✒Check if the doctor (Jonas) is in his clinic.

✔Capitalize abbreviations after a person's name. Some college degrees seem to have unusual capitalization. You are capitalizing the first letter of each word. While you're at it, notice the periods. You'll see them again in another unit.

👉B.S. (Bachelor of Science)
👉M.D. (Medical Doctor)

Capitalize family relationship titles when they are used with names or in place of names.

Ate Eira, Kuya JX, Lolo Schan, Tito Zac, Lola Baby, Tita Niña

✒"Ate Eira asked you to call Tito Zac," Phoena told her sister.

✒Ika-50 anibersaryo ng kasal nina Lolo Schan at Lola Baby sa darating na Sabado.

✒Sabi ni Mama, tanungin mo raw si Papa tungkol sa asignatura mo dahil abala siya.

❌Do not capitalize them if they do not replace the name.

Ang tawag ko sa aking tita at tito ay Tita Ganda at Tito Pogi.

"Ipapakilala kita sa kanyang magandang ate," sabi ni Erik sa kanyang kuya.
