"REMEMBER, FINISH CHAPTER TWELVE and answer twelve-point-three on the difference between an experiment and other forms of scientific investigation. This will be on the test, which will cover chapters ten through twelve. It will be multiple choice with an essay section . . ."

Mr. Clarke trailed off as he realized that many of his students were no longer listening. As soon as the school bell rang and the dismissal of class began, it was as if children turned off their ears to order.  If a teacher could not manage to give someone their homework during the class, they should not attempt to give it afterward. It would only fall on deaf ears.  That was obvious.

Melanie still listened, though, as she remained politely in her seat. Her hand was moving rapidly across the page of her paper as she made sure that she had gotten every last note written down from the chalkboard at the front of the room. In a matter of moments, the only occupants in the room were Mr. Clarke, her brother, their two friends, and herself.

Mike, Dustin, and Lucas were already gathered around Mr. Clarke's desk at the front of the room, staring up at him eagerly. For several weeks, they had been awaiting the arrival of a new piece of equipment for the AV club that the five of them were all a part of. Melanie had never meant to join the club, but it had perked her interest when she realized she was given the opportunity to speak to other towns while also investing time in the technological side of it all.

"So," Mike addressed, "did it come?"

Melanie did not look up from her notetaking, but she could still hear Mr. Clarke's voice drop lower. "Sorry, boys. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but . . ." At the sound of impending rejection, Melanie looked up and saw the growing different expressions of disappointment on the boys' faces. Then, a tilting, playful smirk began to grow on Mr. Clarke's pointed face. "It came!"

Several cries of relief and excitement filled the air as Mr. Clarke fetched the keys to the AV room from his desk. The boys were nearly out the door before Dustin remembered to look back. "Coming, Mel?" He called.

Melanie nodded her head and gathered up her books in her arms as she rose from her seat. She then made her way out into the empty hall, knowing that all the other students were onto their next classes. She did not mind being late, however, and neither did Mr. Clarke (he always wrote their Party little tardy excuses). In fact, Melanie was sure that he enjoyed their company just as much as they enjoyed his.

The AV room was a small, converted closet. Once used for janitorial needs, it had now been transformed into a small office of sorts. The shelves were stacked high with items both in supply for the AV club and also for the school itself. In the center of the room was a large desk and on top of it was the newly put together Heathkit Ham Shack. It was a sparkling turquoise color, wiped down clean, and ready for use.
