Chapter Sixteen: Battle Of The Mind

Nova's POV

There's a war going on in my head. I don't know why. Maybe because I've lost too much? I don't know.

Kai has been coming and going from the Pack House. Is it because I miss my mate?

I look at my daughter and feel sorry for her. She has no siblings. And I feel as if that's all my fault.

Kai has reassured me again and again that we couldn't have done anything. He's been so supportive.

And what have I given him? My anger. My screaming fits. But he stays by me.

Like he promised that night in the woods.

"Hey. Want some food?" I look to the door as Marie walks in. She has a plate in her hands. I must've missed dinner again.

"Thanks, but I'm not hungry." Marie frowns. I try for a smile, only to fail horribly.

"Nova... What's going on? Kai has been telling me about your little..." I glare at her. "Episodes... Tell me what's wrong. He's worried sick."

I look at my hands. "I don't know... I've been so angry since the twins died and... I guess I'm mad at everyone... I can't really explain it..."

My wolf pipes up in the back of my head. "Remember. It's their fault! Sammy could've saved your children! Kai wasn't even there! They're all at fault!"

I cover my temples. "Marie... Please leave me alone." I feel my nose start to prickle.

"Nova... Is your wolf doing this?" She asks quietly.

I stare at her with tear filled eyes. I nod. "Uh-huh... She won't be quiet... She says it's everyone's fault and they need to be punished."

Marie touches my shoulder gently. "Maybe I can help you." My cousin-in-law helps me to my feet. "Let's go on a hunt, yeah?

"I'm not so sure this is a good idea. What if she tried to kill you?" I bite at my nails.

Marie scoffs. "Sorry to tell you this, Luna, but she couldn't even on her best day." I smile a little at the sarcasm.

I undress and take a deep breath. I feel my skin burning and fur growing. Soon, I'm shin high to Marie.

"It is your fault they died, wrench! Die!" My wolf launches at Marie.

I try to hold her back, but her will to avenge her children is too strong.

I watch in horror as Marie blocks my wolf with her arm. "Nova. Take control. You are one in the same. Don't let her take you over." I close my eyes and focus.

I feel my soul and my wolf's merging into one.

When I open my eyes again, I'm off Marie and back on the floor.

Marie's wolf is pure white and beautiful. No wonder Johnathan chose her. "Let's go!"

I follow Marie into the dense forest.

Kai's POV

I walk back into the Pack House, exhausted from the hunts today. I yawn and head into the kitchen, hoping to get some food into my belly before heading to bed.

I freeze seeing Marie and Nova talking. My mate tenses up upon seeing me as well.

"Don't just sit there. Go on." Marie nudges Nova forward.

My mate hugs me gently, almost like asking for approval. I wrap my arms around her waist and stare at my cousin. What did she do?

"I'm sorry about how I've been acting lately. My wolf got the better of me. But Marie made me remember that we don't control one another. That we're one and the same. I love you..."

I smile and kiss the top of my mates head. She nuzzles into me.

I chuckle and mouth 'thank you' to Marie. I didn't know how to deal with this problem.

There was a battle in Nova's mind and I didn't have a solution. But I think Marie understood the situation more because she's been through this before.

A few years ago, Marie was mated to a man named Lucus. He was killed in an accident. At the time my cousin was pregnant.

She was so upset that she killed her own child out of anger. For a long time she was like Nova. Angry and bitter to the world.

My aunt was the one that helped her though it. And I'm thankful to have my cousin here.

"Can we go to bed? Please?" Nova asks, almost like a child.

I nod, forgetting all about my dinner. "Yeah. Let's go." I pick my mate up and take her to our room. I lay Nova on the bed and kiss her neck.

"I'm sorry we didn't get to do this sooner." My mate chuckles as I mumble into her skin.

I slide my hands up her shirt and she stops me. "Not tonight. I'm tired." She whispers. I nod and we get ready for bed.

We lay in the dark, kissing like teenagers.

She tells me jokes and I return them. I missed this.

"Kai?" Nova's voice goes quiet.

"What's wrong?" She chuckles and nuzzles into my chest.

"I was thinking. Since Jasmine is all alone... We could... Try again?" I sigh.

"Are you sure? I mean... We've tried for a long time. It seems like the world doesn't want us having anymore."

Nova laughs. "I'm being serious. Please? We can at least give this one more shot." I nod.

"All right. One more try. If that doesn't work, then I'm calling it quits."

"You can't just quit that like it's a job!"

"Being a parent is a full time no pay job! C'mon. We spent more money on Jasmine when she was born than I make in a month."

Nova laughs and slaps my chest gently. "Your impossible."

We lay there for a while. I kiss her. "Good talk?"

She hums. "Good talk." She agrees and falls asleep.

I kiss the top of her head and snuggle down into the covers. I stare up at the celing and think about what it would be like having more than one pup running around here.

I smile at the thought of Jasmine pushing around her younger sibling and then the kid comes and tells on her.

Then we tell Jasmine to behave and be nice. The kind of cheesy things you see in movies.

I chuckle at myself and fall asleep to the warmth and love that my mate is putting off.
