23 HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF MIXED EMOTIONS

"Listen," Stiles said. "I'm really sorry about last night, but we'll get through this. I know because... I love you. I love you more than I can-" He broke off as Elise erupted into laughter, prompting him to scowl at the McCall siblings. "Scott, you and Allison just have to find a better way to communicate!"

"No they don't, this is utterly hilarious," Elise beamed.

"Besides, you and Elise are the only two we can trust. Is she coming to the game tonight?" Scott persisted, earning another scowl from his best friend.

"Yes. Okay? Message complete."

"Alright, now tell us about what Deaton said," Elise ordered. Apparently, after she'd dropped Scott off at his bosses office, he'd had quite a peculiar experience- though, Elise doubted it was as peculiar as what she'd discovered at Jenessa's house. Even though the brunette had already learned the downside of keeping secrets in Beacon Hills, she refused to tell anyone about the certificate, at least until she found out more about it.

"He said that Allison's family keeps some sort of record of all the things they've hunted. Like a book."

"He probably means a bestiary!" Stiles said, excitement evident in his voice.

"A what?" Scott questioned, eyebrows raising.

"A bestiary."

Scott smirked, his eyes glinting with humor. "I think you mean bestiality."

"No, I'm pretty sure I don't," Stiles frowned.

"It's like an encyclopedia full of mythical creatures and stuff like that," Elise explained, prompting a quizzical look from Stiles. "What?" She shrugged. "I've read Harry Potter."

"How am I the only one who doesn't know any of this stuff?" Scott frowned. All he earned in response was a shrug from each of the other students. "Alright, so we find this book and it can tell us whatever this thing is?"

"And who," Stiles added.

Elise slipped between the sets of bleachers, quickly plucking the set of keys from Allison's downturned hand and stuffing them into her jacket pocket. She nodded at Stiles, who was sitting on the bench next to Coach Finstock. Elise watched as Stiles offered the coach a half-hearted excuse for needing to leave before the boy made his way toward her.

"Do you have them?" Stiles asked as the pair made their way away from the game and toward the parking lot. Allison had promised to get her grandfather's keys so Stiles and Elise could track down the bestiary.

She pulled the keys free from her pocket and dangled them in front of her face. He grinned menacingly for a moment before he spotted something just past the brunette's shoulder. His smile fell, prompting Elise to turn around and find what he was looking at.

Lydia Martin was sitting in her car, blotting tears from her cheeks with a mascara stained tissue. Elise turned back to the boy, finding that he was still watching the other girl. "Go talk to her," Elise sighed, earning a rushed 'thank you' from the boy before he jogged in Lydia's direction.

And then there was one, Elise thought before making her way toward the school.

She rushed through the empty corridors, quickly finding her way to the Principal's office. She fumbled with the keys as she unlocked the door, able to hear the cheering crowd from even inside the building. When she finally managed to get the door to Gerard's office open, she wasted no time in searching for the book.
