(More of a concept than anything)
There are ranks in heaven, an angel with gem wings being the highest rank while the lowest rank being an angel with brass wings (stone used to be the lowest although they were driven out years ago). Every few years (decades, centuries idk) they would have a conflict with hell (or anywhere/place really), a 'drummer' boy would be chosen from the lower ranks and would be situated in front of the soldiers. When the battle begins the angel situated in the front would sacrifice their life force to enhance the abilities of the others (I don't necessarily know how this works). And to be chosen to be this sort of sacrificial lamb was a great honor and there would be this whole ceremony about it. When a brass angel was chosen (which was surprisingly rare) they decided to lash out. So the story could be centered around them or someone else which could be in this universe. The aspect of the power plays between the higher and lower ranks could also be involved.
