"Earth" by Sleeping At Last

I awoke on Halloween morning with a bad feeling.

I'd accidentally fallen asleep on Scott's bed, so I turned over to face him, only to find him missing. I sat up, noticing the door was closed. Wouldn't Scott have remembered I couldn't open doors?

It must have been a mistake. He was probably just downstairs making breakfast, or maybe he was taking a shower. I couldn't know for sure.

I stood and knocked on the door, hoping he'd hear me. "Scott?"

The house was completely silent. Was he even home?

I looked to the window, finding it was open just enough that I might be able to squeeze through. Sitting on the windowpane was a single sleek, black feather. Almost too obviously, it belonged to a raven.

My heart clenched and all the air left my lungs. It felt like I'd been punched in the chest. I knew in my heart this was so, so bad. A sour feeling settled in my stomach.

This was the witches. They were here. Had they taken Scott? How could I have slept through something like that?

I lumbered through the window, which was just wide enough for me to fit. I dropped down a good ten feet to the ground, but it wasn't too hard a landing. The grass softened my fall.

I bolted around to the front of the house, finding Scott's truck was still in its place in the driveway. His dad's police cruiser was right beside it.

His dad. He didn't know Scott was missing. But how could I tell him? He didn't have his son's gift. He couldn't see me.

There had to be someway I could communicate. I'd stop at nothing to save Scott.

I approached the door and slammed my fist into it, banging and banging in hopes Mr. Duncan might hear like Jason's father had. Minutes passed, and the door never opened.

I cursed. This was hopeless. How was I supposed to save Scott by myself?

I banged my head against the door, trying to think. Even if I could get inside, it's not like I could just say Hey, Mr. Duncan! Scott's been kidnapped! Rally the forces, we've got to save him!

I was getting desperate. Hopeless. And then it happened.

I was suddenly on the other side of the door, pouring inside without a chance to catch myself before crashing onto the linoleum floor of the Duncan's foyer.

I blinked for a second. Had I just phased through the door?

Before I could get too excited over my small victory, Scott's dad came around the corner from the kitchen. I shot to my feet and threw myself at him, tugging at his arm and shouting, "Scott's been taken! Scott's missing! You have to go find him!"

He showed no sign he heard me. I let go of him as soon as I realized he was headed for the bathroom. He left the door ajar only a crack, and a moment later I heard the water running in the shower.
