Even though Daniel is the more developed character, Ryann is listed first. Because Ryann always goes first.
Ryann and Daniel are the two major Kingdom employees in Spock. The former is head psychologist and probably a bunch of other little things too - she has her finger in a lot of pies. But her main job is to study the minds of the test subjects and ensure their psychological needs are being met. . . and that none of them get ideas for escape or rebellion. The latter starts as a lowly medical technician and then becomes Evan's supervisor, basically the main scientist in charge of making sure Evan is where he's supposed to be when he's supposed to be there, gathering data concerning Evan, and analyzing said data. There's no glory in it, though - he basically goes from lowly techie to lowly nanny.
Ryann's the main antagonist. Though she's not the one pulling all the strings, she's the highest authority that interacts with Evan on a regular basis. Evan and Gabi are her pet project: the ultimate case study on how to break someone to your will.
Ryann's ruthless, manipulative, and a master of the long game. Her ENTJ patience runs far further than Gabi's (at least, it seems to), and she's more than willing to sacrifice one person for the sake of advancing the human race. She's convinced many of her subjects, Iri especially, to think the same, and it's one of her main ideas she tries to instill in Evan: that his life doesn't matter, only the knowledge humanity will gain from his life. Fortunately, Evan is just too prideful to ever truly believe it.
Ryann also sets up the punishment system for Evan and Gabi using Tosigo once she finds out that Evan's is deathly afraid of snakes. And you'd better believe she uses it. She also has an undying need for control, which is why putting disfigured children into nice compartmentalized boxes (both figuratively and literally) until she needs them again is satisfying for her.
Ryann is in her late forties, early fifties, with shortish graying blonde hair usually knotted in a bun or up in a ponytail. She's somewhat of a natural beauty, though age is beginning to take its toll on her (and she doesn't much care, or bother with make-up). She has hawkish grey-blue eyes. She wears khakis, plain button-down work shirts, black loafers, and an ever-present white lab coat.
(Disclaimer: Of course, not all ENTJs are villains. But lots of villains are ENTJs. They're the most likely to take over the world, after all.)
Then there's Daniel.
Oh, Daniel.
Daniel Parker is a 26-yr-old INTP male biotechnician who is in both the right and the very, very wrong place. The right place in that he has a good job in a field he worked hard to get into that pays good money that he can send to support his single mother and six younger siblings. (I'm 97% sure he comes from a Mormon family.) The wrong place in that he's experimenting on innocent children.
Unfortunately, Kingdom employees are secretly as trapped as the test subjects. Try to resign or sell secrets, and your superiors will make sure you never work in STEM fields again. Retirement is basically the only way out, and you're still monitored for life afterwards. Daniel's fear of being forced out of work takes over his moral compass, and when his superiors tell him to do tests on a sixteen-year-old boy, he does it.
But, unlike Tosigo, he tries to be nice about it.
He and Evan have a rocky start, with Daniel desperately trying to prove he's not "one of them" and Evan bitterly insisting he, in fact, is. As time goes on, however, Evan learns more about Daniel's motivations and they grow closer, until Evan depends on Daniel emotionally in a way that's. . . healthier than some of the worse options, at least. After everything is over, Evan easily refers to Daniel as a friend and is upset to see him sent to jail. He also meets Daniel's family and helps them reconcile their distress upon learning what Daniel was doing at Kingdom.
