★ Tori's POV ★
NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY, I CANNOT FALL ASLEEP.
I try to close my eyes, but then Lukas' sobs fill my ears and I'm filled with him all over again.
Whoever called him, crushed his little heart into two separate pieces. I just need to find out who.
Giving up on the hope of sleep, I get out of bed to heat up some milk to warm my cold bones. I walk down the hall, tiptoeing last Lukas' door so I won't wake him. I enter the kitchen, pour a glass of milk, and put the cup in the microwave.
"You're up, too," Lukas says, walking behind me, sounding broken.
"Yeah. Why are you?" I ask.
"Couldn't sleep." He says.
"Any reason?" I call over the beeping of the microwave.
"Insomnia." He lies. I can always tell when Lukas lies. He can never look at me when he does.
"The truth?" I ask.
"Insomnia." Lukas lies again.
"You're lying," I say, hurt.
"No... shit. Tori...." Lukas says, walking up to me slowly, finally looking at me, guilt taking over his face.
"You always lie, Lukas. Have you ever heard of the term honesty?" I ask, angrily.
"Yeah, but it takes time for me to open up to someone. You're the first one I've told about my messed up family." He says.
"Really?" I ask, taking the hot milk out of the microwave. And warming my hands on the warm cup.
"Yeah. Because I know you won't judge me." He says.
"I won't judge you, because it's not your fault. You can't help the fact that your family is messed up." I say, honestly.
"Yes, it is. It's my fault my dad never came to my doorstep to say goodbye. It's my fault my mother left. Since Carter died and I was the only one left, she knew that she had no reason to stay." Lukas explains.
"See this scar?" He asks, pointing to the long jagged line across his cheek. "I got it from my mom when she abused me. My nickname was 'worthless piece of shit' that's what my whole family called me! Even Carter!" Lukas says, crying now.
"Lukas, I'm so sorry!" I say.
"Don't. Don't be sorry. It's not your damn fault! Now, my father's been killed and it's all because of me!" He says, angry.
"Wait, your dad's dead?" I ask, not believing the words that just came out of Lukas' mouth.
"Yeah. My boss killed him. With a shotgun. He fucking murdered my father." Lukas says, angry again.
"Lukas, calm down. I can help you...." I say.
"No. You can't. I'm broken beyond repair." Lukas says, looking down at the floor.
"Lukas-" I say, but stop when he shakes his head.
"I have to go." He says.
