Shane's eyes flew open. Behind him, there was a neat bullet hole in a tree and an explosion of bark at the tree's roots.
The Onyx League member cursed.
The bullet had missed him. He was alive.
Shane's next action required no thinking.
He raised his arms. Outstretched his hands. Focused on his attacker.
Felt the energy build in his chest. Spread through his limbs. Crackle along his nerves. Vibrate in his breath. Tingle on his finger tips.
The lightning bolt that erupted from Shane's hands was massive. For a full second, the entire forest was painted a dazzling white-blue. Every leaf was illuminated; his surroundings became a landscape of stark, shockingly dramatic lighting.
Most of the lightning bolt missed the figure, spearing a tree above them, causing energy to crackle throughout its leaves and branches.
But a fork of electricity diverged from the main blast and attacked the closest conductive metal.
The Onyx League member shrieked as their hand was shocked. They dropped their gun and it landed on the ground, smoking.
"How dare you, you little-"
They didn't even finish their sentence, just raised their hand and threw a blast of fire straight at Shane's head.
He dropped to the ground just in time, the fire searing his hair.
Shane had avoided getting burnt to death, but now he was on the ground, vulnerable to the next attack.
The Onyx League member crowed triumphantly and lifted their hands to deliver another wave of fire.
Shane could already feel himself dying in a violent crimson inferno, feel the flame burning his skin.
Suddenly, there was a blur of motion. It was his Bondling, rushing to defend him!
"Spark!" Shane yelled. The Vulpid was going to get burnt!
His brave, brave Bondling sprang towards Shane's assailant and buried his fangs in the woman's legs.
She screamed with agony, battering her hands against the Bondling's head. Spark yelped with pain and jumped away.
It was all the distraction Shane needed. He sent another blast of electricity straight at his enemy, focusing every ounce of energy.
He poured all of his strength into attacking. The Onyx League member began to spasm, flailing and quivering. She doubled over, and then crumbled to the ground.
She stayed on the ground, hunched and twitching, but Shane didn't stop. He could feel his brain blaring with the pain, the pain that felt so good, that was so pleasing. He relished the pain, relished the knowledge that it was real and in this world and had an edge to it, savoured the fact that it was but a fraction of the agony his enemy was experiencing.
The lightning bolt grew, augmenting. Soon, Shane could see nothing, blinded by the intense light.
He could hear nothing except his own heart beat and the crackling of energy in the air.
And then his psi-band began to scream.
Shane is back in business! He has never been more powerful, using huge amounts of energy and mental strength to fuel his Electrokinetic attack. And that power has allowed him to defeat an Onyx League member. But he has forgotten the most important part, the most deadly risk. In his passion and emotion, has he delved into his human mental capacity? Will his strength be his final downfall?
