Chapter Six

Eliza

The past few days flew by so quickly I hadn't even realized it was Saturday. Between my shifts at Divers, helping where I could on the farm, and sewing the most perfect dress for the party tonight-I'd really lost track of time.

I'd been completing a few finishing touches on my dress when I heard a gentle knock on my door.

"Come in," I sang out, and turned the sewing machine off.

When I turned around, Daddy was peaking his head in. "I've been thinkin about this party tonight."

I had to close my eyes to keep them from rolling, "What about it, daddy?"

He walked into my room fully and sat down on the bed. I turned in my chair so that I could look at him fully. His gray hair was wildly disheveled and the tan lines from his sunglasses were a little more noticeable than usual. "I'll only agree if you have someone to take you and pick you up. I don't trust any of your little friends to go out to that place and not drink."

I swallowed hard and wanted to argue with him. "That's just silly. All of my friends will be there. Besides, it's a Saturday night. Who doesn't have their own plans and would be willing to drop me off and then pick me back up at midnight?"

"I've already talked to Austin, and he's agreed to it." He lifted himself from the bed, "Don't argue with me. It's done."

Oh. Him. Of course, he doesn't have any plans. I'm shocked that he'd even agree to be in the same vicinity as me since he'd spent the last three days doing everything in his power to avoid me like I had some deadly disease. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what his problem was. The first day, I thought we might be able to work out some type of friendship, maybe even tip toe around edge of flirtation but after the fabric shop fiasco he'd dodged me like the damn plague.

It was utterly confusing. I tried not to chalk it up to the fact that I'd learned some very personal information about me, but it was hard. Let's face it, who'd want to flirt with an inexperienced virgin? Hell, did I really even know how to flirt?

That wasn't important. Maybe it was because he was finally settling in, and he realized how miserable his life would be for the next three months.

I knew very well how quickly things got dull out here on this farm. I'd lived here my entire life, so I was used to it. Even though his work duties had gotten a little more complicated than they were the first day-I knew he was getting restless so I atleast tried to rustle up some excitement. Like the night before last, I'd invited him to go swimming with me out at the pond after supper. I can't seem to shake how easily his eyes seized me up and then pushed passed me, muttering a snarky "I'll pass." It was borderline rude the way he said it, but I went on about my business as if he had bothered me. Even though, it did bother me on some bass-ackwards way.
