Castiel goes missing for six months without a word, by the end of the first mouth Sam is convinced he's dead, by the end of the second, Dean is starting to belive it too, despite himself. By the end of the fourth he's given up all hope of finding him and has fallen into depression, Sam died within that time, and Dean hasn't eaten since his death, and ever since cas' disappearance he hasn't eaten much anyway.
