Chapter 5

Chase was walking over to the pits when he saw Ryan standing a bit aside, talking to the inspector. The place was very busy and Chase had difficulties seeing them without people crossing his field of view.
He stopped, pretending he was looking at his phone. However, he glanced into his friend's direction. Normally, he wasn't a nosy guy, but this time he wished he could hear what they were saying. Actually, he didn't know what to think about all this. Ryan didn't look really happy, in fact, he seemed to be angry. When he was talking, he gestured a lot, and he definitely knew how Ryan looked when he was angry. Gunther however, didn't seem to be too impressed. He stayed calm. If he only knew what they were talking about!
Was Gunther confronting Ryan with last night? Couldn't be.

He didn't tell him anything about it. Or did someone else see Ryan before him? Shouldn't be a big deal, should it? Chase was sure Ryan didn't have anything to do with this.

He saw how Ryan wanted to walk away, Gunther grabbing his arm and pulling him back. Now the inspector seemed to be angry, bowing down closer to Ryan and talking to him. When Ryan pulled away, he rubbed his arm where Gunther had held him to stop him from leaving.

"Ryan!", Chase shouted, running to his friend.
"What's up?"
It was hard for Chase to pretend like nothing has happened, but he had the feeling it was better not to tell Ryan he already spoke to the inspector.
"Sorry I left. I couldn't sleep and didn't want to bother you.", Ryan said. He must have thought Chase wanted to talk about that.
"Doesn't matter, I'm fine with that", he laughed, spinning around to see whether Gunther wasn't in reach.
"Who was this man you've been talking to?", Chase asked with false innocence as they were walking.
"Who?" Ryan stopped.

He was a bad liar. Chase could see that his innocent voice was as fake as his.

"The man you've been talking to. Literally one minute before I caught you." He crossed his arms.
"Oh him - "
"He told me he was investigating in some special case but didn't tell me what exactly. He just wanted to know whether something special has happened."
He was lying. He was such a bad liar. Even the most naive person on this planet would have seen that, Chase thought.
Probably the fact that Ryan was a bad liar was the reason for Chase to believe him when he told him he didn't do drugs. He was so honest. But right now, he was fucking lying.
He raised a brow at Ryan.
"Police? He didn't tell you anything?"
"No."
"Nothing?"
"Why are you asking like that?" Ryan got nervous, and to be honest, Chase did enjoy it a bit.
"Just to know. Why did he pull you back then? Didn't seem really friendly."

Ryan remained silent. He didn't look into his friend's eyes, but as he finally did, he lowered his voice.
"He didn't."

If Chase wouldn't have seen it, that would've been the point where he couldn't tell whether he was lying or not. But this time, he knew his friend was lying because he knew what he'd seen.

And it made him really angry to know that Ryan kept lying. And not telling him what was going on. And he, the idiot himself, wanted to help him.
It took Chase some time until he realised that Ryan had left.

"Come on, I've seen you! Why are you lying?" He shouted, but all he could see was Ryan disappearing in the crowd.
