Unique Intuitions

I woke up to the faint screeching of gulls, a bleak light coming from the opened trapdoor and a crisp saltiness about the air today, replacing the usual stench of a long journey. Was this the recovering sense of a new beginning?

However, I could tell the wind wasn't as innocent as it seemed. Though there was no malice within its gusts, you could tell there was a hidden determination. I was on to something.

Sitting up, I ran my fingers through my hair and adjusted my headscarf. I was crazy. Instead of doing my job, I was sitting in my hammock mentally examining the hidden agendas of the air?

Come on, you. I mumbled to myself as I swung over, my boots hitting the planks. Quit over thinking, for once.

I was always very intuitive. It was a mistake to push these feelings from my mind.

"Are you tired, Princess Pirate?" Ragetti snickered and leaned back into his hammock, sliding a slimy, old apple slice into his mouth and wolf-whistling sheepishly.

I pulled myself up into my solid stance and my eyes slipped over to meet the group of crewmen, a grimace covering my cheeks. They were all sitting around playing cards.

"You have no idea, mate."

But I wasn't tired at all. I felt odd, to say the least. I was on watch.

Seeing my lack of jest, Ragetti turned from me nervously and focused on the hand he was dealt. I made my way over to the trap door, readjusting my dress and clipping my belt back around my waist.

Looking through towards the light, my toes stopped underneath me. I glanced around, out the peepholes in the walls and through the trapdoor up towards the mast. I'm not sure how long I stood there, my head whipping around from portal to portal, but it was remarkably interesting how fast it looked like we were covering sea. Clouds were whipping out of visibility behind the stern. Some force was pulling us towards the shores of Shipwreck Cove. The ship was almost quaking from this speed.

I pivoted to look back at them. "Men, what are you doin' down here?"

They scoffed and mumbled. Ragetti leaned forward, his eyes squinting a bit.
"The sames' you doin, Poppit. Ya just woke up, aye?" He stood up a bit and leaned forward, sneering with his smudged teeth.

I waved my hand towards him. "That isn't what I meant." Stepping towards the light, my eyes were focused. "How are we possibly going at this speed without the entire crew manning the deck?"

My hands slipped around the rungs of the loose ladder and I clambered up, pulling myself onto the deck and into the ringing sunlight.

The wind whistled around my hair for a moment, the light flickered wildly, and then it all stopped. All the movement centered and halted about me, and I was left with a stark stillness, Mr. Gibbs, Jack and several other crewmembers staring at me.

"H-how did that happen?" My head stung.

"Eh?" Gibbs was confused, trying to read my face with his eyes, and I looked past his head to see that we were fastened to the dock.

"I'm glad you've graced us with your presence, love."

Jack took a feathery step forward and my eyes fluttered to his boots as he advanced towards my face.

"We've been waiting here at dock for hours for you to wake up."

I didn't respond, muttering to myself and staring into space. Jack's head cocked, trying to decipher what I was doing.

"How... What--?" I couldn't form the words so I grabbed his sleeve, pulling him closer to me as I set my lips against his ear.

"Jack... Something's happening."
