Life is a simulation and nothing is real. Every time there is a daylight savings time, the simulation resets itself so people will not become aware of the programming; Holidays are also common around these times as another distraction. As the decades go by, more people are becoming aware despite the resets twice every year. The creators of the simulation decide to take things further and kill those off that are becoming aware of their situation...the rest is up to you.
