I was woken up the next few mornings by the beaming smile of Harry’s. He was planning something for me and I knew that I would not know what it would be until Saturday. Today was Friday. Ugh, this day was going to be the longest day of my life. Not that I’m doing anything all day anyway, except for looking after Harry, whose demands seem to be growing more and more since he got back. The agenda consisted today of seeing Charles and Camilla, William and Catherine before having dinner with the Queen in the evening. I have met her, and she seems like a lovely woman.
Overall, the day went very well. Harry and William seemed to be planning whatever was going to happen at the weekend while Catherine and I were talking. A few smiles, smirks and cheesy grins were directed at me from Harry, before he decided to lift me up (which he should never had done in his condition) and take me outside to talk to me. When we had got outside he said, “You know I said I wanted to marry you?”
I looked at him, confused and replied, “Yeh, you made it pretty damn clear that you want to marry me.”
“Well, the thing is, baby, I have spoken to William about it and I have come to the conclusion that it is too soon for us to get married. But I love the way we are now, happy.”
“Babe, we don’t have to get married yet, it’s whenever you are ready to ask me the question. No time before. Don’t think I am rushing you into this, because I would never do that to you. I love you and that’s never going to change anything.”
He looked at me with a little tear in his eye, “I was hoping you would say that. I love you too.”
The meeting with the Queen was lovely. She asked me about how Harry was getting on, during his road to recovery, and she also took an interest in how I was doing at work too. Due to everything that had been happening to Harry, I was on compassionate leave at work, so that I could look after him. At the moment, all I wanted to do was get back to work and forget about all of the stresses and worries of the personal life I lead. Once the meeting with the Queen was over, Harry and I headed home, although he didn’t actually come to bed after I had fallen asleep, probably planning our day for our first anniversary.
On Saturday morning I was awoken by the smell of freshly-made pancakes and some sort of chocolate. I tried to get myself back to sleep, so Harry could wake me up I could be all surprised, but that just wasn’t working for me today. So, I sat up in bed and waited for Harry to burst through the door and give me my breakfast in bed.
I can’t believe how long it takes a man to bring me breakfast in bed. So long, in fact, that I fell asleep waiting for it. Once it was delivered, though, it was amazing. I had amazingly good pancakes with chocolate spread, which I’m not entirely convinced were made by Harry. Hey, I’m not arguing! I was made to get dressed very quickly, and pack some clothes for wherever we were staying. I had no clue where the hell we were going, so I supposed it would be the best surprise ever.
We were on the road. Up somewhere north. Quite far north. By the time I had actually woken up, we were in Scotland. I knew we were going north, but I didn’t think it would be this far. Harry was taking me to Birkhall, near Balmoral Castle. “Soph, Sophia, baby, wake up. We’re here.”
I woke up from my deep sleep to meet Harry’s eyes right infront of me, “We’re here?”
“Yes, we’re here. And if you don’t want to get cold, then let’s get out of the car.”
Harry opened my door and led me into the cottage. It was beautiful. I have no idea what the time was, but when Harry opened the door, it smelled of a lovely dinner cooking. Harry looked at me and said, “You go and sit on the sofa, and I’ll get dinner over before you fall asleep.”
I replied, “Thank you honey. I don’t know why, but I have come over all tired all of a sudden.”
“Well, that’s a good excuse to go and sit down,” he turned me round and pointed at the sofa. I gave him a small peck on his cheek, and he was off into the kitchen. In 5 minutes he had delivered dinner to me on a tray. I ate it so fast, as I didn’t realise how hungry I was, and then was more awake than ever.
“Darling, where are we off to now?”
“Ah, well Princess, now that you mention it, we have to be getting off if we’re gonna get there.”
“Where, where are we going?”
“That, baby, you will know when we get there. Now come on or we won’t get there.” He ushered me out of the door and into the car straight away. We drove for about 30 minutes until we reached our destination. It was a lake. In the middle of nowhere. We got out of the car, Harry took me hand and we walked to a small building on the edge of the lake. I never realised, but Harry had brought our bags with us. He was up to something.
“Why are our bags here?”
“Because, this is where we are staying tonight.”
“And why are we staying here tonight?”
“You’ll see honey.”
“You are seriously creeping me out.” He led me into the small building and out some lights on. There was nothing in the place, just a gas heater. I never realised that Harry had bought a double sleeping bag, either. So much for a nice anniversary. I looked at him sceptically, and then looked back to the room. “We are staying here tonight?”
“Yes, get comfy.”
That was what I did. I got comfy in the sleeping bag and sorted everything out. Just as I was about to keep warm in the sleeping bag, Harry summoned me outside. I went out to absolute darkness. “Just stand there, and don’t move,” I heard Harry’s voice say. Just then I saw something being lit out of the corner of my eye. They were fireworks. Suddenly, I felt Harry’s arms snake around my waist from behind. The fireworks were spectacular. When they had stopped I saw a large amount of lights go on and I felt Harry walk away from me.
Only he didn’t walk away from me, he came round and stood in front of me. He took my hands and looked into my eyes, “Sophia Smith, you have made me feel like the luckiest man alive. I don’t know where I would be without you,” he got down on one knee and took my left hand, “I guess what I’m trying to say Soph, is will you make me that happiest man alive and do the honour in becoming my wife?”
I stood there speechless. I finally whispered out the words very quietly, “Yes. I love you.”
Harry stood up and buried his face in my hair, “I love you too. So much. Happy anniversary gorgeous.”
