Winter's Breath

Icy breaths

Coat all things

In a thick, hard glaze.

Tree limbs rattle

Against the side of the house.

Fierce gusts

Blow loose snow

Across the barren land.

Yet far beneath

Five inches

Of blanketed snow

And frozen earth,

Lies a small seed

Carrying hope

Of the coming spring,

When winter's breath

Shall no longer ravage

A frozen land.

Then spring will come,

Banishing cold,

Bringing warmth

And light

To icy darkness.
