When Nicholas Cooper was 9 years old, his mother knelt in front of him and rested her hand on his knee.
“Nicky, I need you to promise me something,” she said slowly. “If something ever happens to me, I need you to look after Jack.”
Nicholas scrunched his nose and peered down at her. “Yeah, ok,” he said dismissively as he hopped off the bench. “Can you take me to Chris’ house now? You told me yesterday you would.”
Francesca looked down at her son and nodded.
The request wasn’t out of the ordinary except for the fact that at 20, Jack was more than 10 years older than Nicholas.
