"Push it forward! Your entry is too weak again!"
One spin, two, three and...
Nope. Not four.
Kim Jongin stumbles down from his jump, his body hitting hard, cold surface. Thank God he has gloves on.
He hears sound of skates approaching him while he's breathing heavily on his back, eyes closed and body lax.
"Quad salchow. An Olympic gold medalist can't perform quad salchow. Jenjinskov landed it in his free yesterday. We can easily hand him over Olympic title right away, if you want to fool around and jump like my grandma. Actually no, that's offensive to her."
Jongin's lips tug into a sarcastic smile as he sits up, bending his knees.
"You know your motivational speeches don't really work anymore." he glances amusedly at his coach, who's standing above him with crossed arms and thick eyebrows furrowed.
"What works then? Partying five days a week?"
Jongin laughs briefly. He stands up and stretches, standing in front of his coach.
"My, my, coach. What do you think of me?"
"That you're a failure of a skater and a waste of time."
Jongin acts offended and stumbles back, grabbing himself by his chest.
"Ouch! That hurts, coach!"
Coach just rolles his eyes at his student's childlish remarks, slapping his head.
"You're 21! Get yourself together! You know very well that not everyone can be trained by me and that I don't take in anyone who's not serious about skating. I've been training you for 6 years but believe me boy, if you don't plan on giving me something in return, you are free to go."
His eyes are directed on Jongin's like he wants to burn through him. Jongin puts his hands on his waist and pushes himself backwards, skating a little further away.
"Okay. Again." he says, stretching his arms above his head.
His coach skates back. Jongin watches behind him to wait until the man can watch him again.
Jongin knows he was lucky to become one of his students at the age of fourteen. He likes to tease him sometimes but he still respects him deeply. He knows his boundaries when in comes to his coach.
The man's name is Byun Jae Joon. Olympic gold and silver medalist. A living legend. Jongin never told him that, but he is the guilty one for Jongin's love for skating. His first encounter with the sport happened when he was four. The Olympics were on while little Jongin sat in front of TV with eyes glued on it. He was mesmerized by pretty skaters and their graceful, elegant moves. They captured his heart, but when the Olympic champion Byun Jae Joon showed up, that was it. He watched in awe as the champion climbed on the pedestal, lifting his arms up and kissing the gold medal around his neck. Pride, happiness and the feeling of fulfillment flickered in his eyes, and that's a sight Jongin was hooked onto immediately. A four-year-old decided on his path. He would become a skater like his idol Jae Joon, or even better.
Byun Baekhyun, his coach's son, trains with Jongin on daily basis. Baekhyun as well is an excellent and passionate skater, but the short 20-year-old does it just because he loves being on ice. He enjoys it and has a role of team's happy virus, but he's never been bothered with titles and medals. Even though his father was first class skater, he has never forced his son to take his steps. He taught him how to skate and let the rest be Baekhyun's will.
