I huffed when I realized that I can't find my phone with me. Why do I always have to be late to every meeting? I groaned and turned to get back up and grab my phone.
Of course, the elevator will stop in each floor just because I need to hurry. I gave an ugly stare at the people stepping in or out, wanting to tell them that they are wasting my time.
When I arrived at my floor, I hurried out and to the door. I opened the door, left it open and started to look where I left my phone. Rita was probably waiting for me right now and she will kill me as soon as she sees me because when she called me twenty minutes ago, I told her I was leaving.
That reminded me that the last time I used my phone was when she called me and that was when I was getting dressed. I went to the bedroom and found my phone ringing on the bed. I rolled my eyes, grabbed it then hurried it out. In the elevator, I thought that I didn't even need my phone. No one calls me other than Rita and she will be with me the whole day.
When she saw me approaching her car, she rolled down the window and yelled "I'm going to murder you." I opened the door and stepped in. "Seriously?"
"Drive, Rita. We are already late." I told her.
"No shit, Sherlock. Guess who's the reason of being late to her own work and made me come hear early." She yelled as she drove out of the parking lot.
"I'm sorry." I told her about the phone that I forgot and had to go back up and explained the elevator struggle that I went through which caused her to laugh. I looked at my phone to find ten missed calls from Rita. I giggled and told her about it.
"I was trying to make you hurry, didn't know you'd be dumb enough to forget your phone." She teased me before driving to the publishing house. I needed to tell Clifford what happened and that I didn't even got to go to New York. Even though, deep down, I feel like he knows. Of course, he would know if I arrived their and did the interview or not. "Are you okay?"
"I just feel a little worried," I turned to look at her even if her eyes were on the road, "I feel like it won't just pass by."
"Didn't you say that he is your father's friend?" She asked me.
"Yeah, but that doesn't give me a chance to mess up like this." I told her.
When we arrived, I quickly got out of the car and rushed inside. I knew that I had to get this over with and get over my stress that kept creasing the more I get closer to his office. I knocked and turned the knob open. Clifford was talking on the phone, looked up at me and gave me a sign with his hand to sit down. God so help me with the look he gave me when he saw me walking in.
"Yeah, of course." He said. I heard mumbles of incomprehensible words being said on the other line. I took a seat and waited for him to finish. "Don't do anything unless I approve, I told you." He stayed silent again, hearing to the other person. "Alright, great, that's awesome. Send it to me." Another small pause was taken then he finished with a small bye then hung up. My heart dropped. His eyes looked up at me, he crossed his arms and leaned back onto his large chair.
The silence was making me feel so uncomfortable, I wasn't sure what he was waiting for. If he will fire me then he can do it before I lose my brain.
"Mind explaining what happened?" He used a tone that was the completely opposite of the one he used on the phone call.
"Sir, listen," I opened my mouth to explain myself but then I realized that whatever my brain had in line to be said is words that can't be used as an excuse for something so huge.
"I am listening." He pushed me to talk.
"I will tell you all the truth." I cleared my throat and explained everything to him, everything. I told him about what happened with Noah, how he called them and told them that I wasn't going to make it and how Anthony had to drive two hours to get me from the rain. I told him how I got sick and couldn't move. I also told him that the moment I felt just a little better, I came here right away. I knew that whatever I said didn't make any sense and I wasn't waiting for him to accept my excuses and pass it but all I wanted to do was clean my image. I didn't want him to see me as the girl that is still immature and cancelled big plans like this just because she was a little sick, I would never do that.
He sat there, listening attentively to what I was saying. As much as I wanted him to talk to know what he thinks about what I was saying, the silence he offered me was comforting me to tell him more.
"You should have called, at least." He added.
"I would have if I could, but I really couldn't. At first I was under chock of what happened to me and then I got very sick and couldn't even more, other than the fights I had with my...with Anthony." I gulped and looked down at my hands.
"Me, being your boss, I can easily tell you that what you've done is unacceptable and unforgivable," he said.
"I know, I'm very sorry. I am not even asking to give me back my internship. I understand that what I did was wrong." At that point, I was very sure that he wanted to tell me to leave and never come back in a nice way and I totally respected that, after all, it was all my fault trusting Noah.
"But me being your father's friend and knowing how much you really need this internship, I will pretend that this whole thing never happened." He said, planting a new level of joy that I couldn't keep inside. I gasped, stood up and jumped, clapping my hands and thanked him. He giggled silently and shook his head. "But," he raised his index finger in front of his face, "if you do this again or i received any bad news about you, you won't really be happy with the consequences." He said and I completely agreed.
"Thank you so much," I smiled as my phone rang. I ignored him as he explained to me how he knew that I didn't go. He thought that I left and didn't arrive.
"I got scared, I thought something bad happened to you when you arrived or you got lost or you were even held back and couldn't leave from here but when I called the airport, they told me that you didn't even arrive. I called the New York magazine and they told me that you called and cancelled, which somehow made me less worried but I didn't understand why." He explained to me. Sitting with him, reminds me so much of sitting with my dad.
My phone started ringing again for the forth time and I couldn't ignore it anymore. I got out out of bag angrily and looked at the caller ID. It was Beth. I mentally rolled my eyes. She will probably just talk to me about me leaving Anthony, he probably told her. He probably told all of his friends and played the victim or them too.
"Pick up,"
"It's not important." I cancelled the call but she called me again right after.
"It seems important, pick up."
"Hello," I pressed the phone to my ear, preparing myself to hear the stupidest arguments ever to get back with Anthony. But it wasn't like that at all.
"Bella, help. Anthony got arrested."
